Two-dimensional spectroscopy for the study of ion Coulomb crystals

2015

Ion Coulomb crystals are currently establishing themselves as a highly controllable test-bed for mesoscopic systems of statistical mechanics. The detailed experimental interrogation of the dynamics of these crystals however remains an experimental challenge. In this work, we show how to extend the concepts of multi-dimensional nonlinear spectroscopy to the study of the dynamics of ion Coulomb crystals. The scheme we present can be realized with state-of-the-art technology and gives direct access to the dynamics, revealing nonlinear couplings even in the presence of thermal excitations. We illustrate the advantages of our proposal showing how two-dimensional spectroscopy can be used to detec…

The translationally-invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space

2000

We study a formulation of the translationally-invariant coupled cluster method in coordinate space. Previous calculations in configuration space showed poor convergence, a problem that the new formulation is expected to remedy. This question is investigated for a system of bosons interacting through the Wigner part of the Afnan-Tang S3 interaction, where previous results exist.

Search for the decay B0→a1±ρ∓

2006

We present a search for the rare B-meson decay B-0 -> a(1)(+/-)rho(-/+) with a(1)(+/-)->pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-). We use (110 +/- 1.2)x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-> B (B) over bar decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We obtain an upper limit of 30x10(-6) (90%C.L.) for the branching fraction product B(B-0 -> a(1)(+/-)rho(-/+))B(a(1)(+/-)->pi(+)pi(-)pi(+/-)), where we assume that the a(1)(+/-) decays exclusively to rho(0)pi(+/-).

Magnetic field driven enhancement of the weak decay width of charged pions

2020

We study the effect of a uniform magnetic field B→ on the decays π⁻ → l⁻ ν⁻l, where l⁻ = e⁻, μ⁻, carrying out a general analysis that includes four π⁻ decay constants. Taking the values of these constants from a chiral effective Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model, it is seen that the total decay rate gets strongly increased with respect to the B = 0 case, with an enhancement factor ranging from ∼ 10 for eB = 0.1 GeV² up to ∼ 10³ for eB = 1 GeV². The ratio between electronic and muonic decays gets also enhanced, reaching a value of about 1 : 2 for eB = 1 GeV². In addition, we find that for large B the angular distribution of outgoing antineutrinos shows a significant suppression in the direction…

Microscopic description of complex nuclear decay: multimodal fission

2009

Our understanding of nuclear fission, a fundamental nuclear decay, is still incomplete due to the complexity of the process. In this paper, we describe a study of spontaneous fission using the symmetry-unrestricted nuclear density functional theory. Our results show that the observed bimodal fission can be explained in terms of pathways in multidimensional collective space corresponding to different geometries of fission products. We also predict a new phenomenon of trimodal spontaneous fission for some rutherfordium, seaborgium, and hassium isotopes.

Precision measurement of the Λ+c baryon mass

2005

The $\Lambda_c^+$ baryon mass is measured using $\Lambda_c^+\to\Lambda K^0_S K^+$ and $\Lambda_c^+\to\Sigma^0 K^0_S K^+$ decays reconstructed in 232 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ storage ring. The $\Lambda_c^+$ mass is measured to be $2286.46\pm0.14\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$. The dominant systematic uncertainties arise from the amount of material in the tracking volume and from the magnetic field strength.

Tri/Bi-maximal lepton mixing and leptogenesis

2009

In models with flavour symmetries added to the gauge group of the Standard Model the CP-violating asymmetry necessary for leptogenesis may be related with low-energy parameters. A particular case of interest is when the flavour symmetry produces exact Tri-Bimaximal lepton mixing leading to a vanishing CP-violating asymmetry. In this paper we present a model-independent discussion that confirms this always occurs for unflavoured leptogenesis in type I see-saw scenarios, noting however that Tri-Bimaximal mixing does not imply a vanishing asymmetry in general scenarios where there is interplay between type I and other see-saws. We also consider a specific model where the exact Tri-Bimaximal mi…

Dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering of the proton

2001

We present in detail a dispersion relation formalism for virtual Compton scattering (VCS) off the proton from threshold into the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance region. Such a formalism can be used as a tool to extract the generalized polarizabilities of the proton from both unpolarized and polarized VCS observables over a larger energy range. We present calculations for existing and forthcoming VCS experiments and demonstrate that the VCS observables in the energy region between pion production threshold and the $\Delta(1232)$-resonance show an enhanced sensitivity to the generalized polarizabilities.

Characterization of alpha sources by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry

1996

Radioactive sources for alpha spectrometry are usually prepared by electrodeposition onto stainless steel backings (and sometimes heated). In earlier work, using the conventional method with passivated implanted planar silicon detectors for the measurements, several sources had been characterized in terms of various parameters by fitting the data of each spectrum to a certain mathematical function. In the present work, the Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) technique with a 1.6 MeV He+ beam was used to study the influence of those factors on the surface distribution and depth profiles of the thin radionuclide layers. Simulations of the measurements using the RUMP computer code wer…

Liquid-scintillation detection of preseparated 257Rf with the SISAK-system

2005

Abstract The fast liquid–liquid extraction system SISAK with continuous liquid scintillation detection was coupled to the Berkeley Gas-filled Separator to enable studies of the chemical properties of α -decaying transactinide elements. The preseparated transactinide 257Rf (4.7 s), was transported via a He/KCl-jet directly into the scintillation solution. This permitted the first unambiguous detection of transactinide atoms by the means of the α -liquid scintillation detectors of the SISAK-system. During the experiment, 89 257Rf atoms were observed. The type of events observed correspond well with the expectations based on half-lives, decay branches and transport- and hold-up times. The succ…
