Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight
2021
From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia…
Pay Now, Consume Later: The Power of Delayed Gratification
2021
This chapter analyzes the birth and development of modern tourism. The bubble model, an economic instrument that originated in Fordism, provides the direction to this analysis. Mass-scale production generated much frustration and discontent in society. Economists who historically suggested consumption as a great malady for the economy emphasize consumers’ self-control as the only way to reach a zero-poverty society. Tourism not only revitalized the social frustration of capitalism but also allowed rapid globalization of the world. For this project to be successful, all-paid packages and tours were widely offered to travelers. Prepaid tours or all-inclusive tours emerged as an excellent reas…
Expressing Professional Identity through Blogging - A Case Study of Blogging in the Study of the Subject of Norwegian in Pre-School Teacher Education
2015
Abstract This article shows how blogging was used in a course in Norwegian in pre-school teacher education, and investigates how professional identity was expressed in the blogs. We investigate the students’ use of the affordances of the blog medium, and connect their expressions to the five competencies of pre-school teachers expressed in the Norwegian framework plan for this education (subject, didactic, social, developmental and ethical competence). Connections between professional identity, subject content and uses of ICT are thus drawn up.
Schelling-Voter Model: An Application to Language Competition
2013
In this work we analyze the language competition problem by using an interacting agent-based model which interpolates the classical Schelling and Voter models. Briefly, an agent may change its place of residence or his language when he is surrounded by more individuals of the other kind than the ones he can tolerate. We analyze this dynamic process in terms of the free space to move in, the pressure to change the language, and the propensity to change location. We identify the different regimes and the relationship with the language competition problem. Fil: Caridi, Délida Inés. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales. Local spectral theory for Drazin invertible operators
2016
Abstract In this paper we investigate the transmission of some local spectral properties from a bounded linear operator R, as SVEP, Dunford property (C), and property (β), to its Drazin inverse S, when this does exist.
Fundamental rights and the proportionality principle
2017
The paper assesses the widespread use of the test of proportionality in fundamental rights adjudication. While constitutional and human rights courts all over the world appear to be consistently engaged in deploying the test of proportionality in order to assess the permissibility of a given rights limitation, this approach is under severe criticism insofar as it is considered an attack to the very idea of fundamental rights. The paper will discuss this criticism of the use of proportionality, and will provide a defense of its use by courts in light of some basic features of the contemporary discourse of fundamental rights. El artículo evalúa el uso generalizado de la prueba de proporcional…
Ancient proteins resolve the evolutionary history of Darwin's South American ungulates.
2015
No large group of recently extinct placental mammals remains as evolutionarily cryptic as the approximately 280 genera grouped as 'South American native ungulates'. To Charles Darwin, who first collected their remains, they included perhaps the 'strangest animal[s] ever discovered'. Today, much like 180 years ago, it is no clearer whether they had one origin or several, arose before or after the Cretaceous/Palaeogene transition 66.2 million years ago, or are more likely to belong with the elephants and sirenians of superorder Afrotheria than with the euungulates (cattle, horses, and allies) of superorder Laurasiatheria. Morphology-based analyses have proved unconvincing because convergences…
Smiling is Fun, an online intervention for the prevention and treatment of emotional disorders
2016
The ‘value of solidarity’ in the public housing stock alienation. a case study in palermo (italy)
2020
As many low-income households have still been facing the problem of affordable housing, in several countries governmental institutions have implemented various measures of housing policy and are supporting both the “right to housing” and the “right to buy” a dwelling at a subsidized price. Alienation of public housing is a political measure mostly directed towards low-income tenants, by which the dwellings are sold at a price set by law, assumed as a “administered” price. The gap between market and administered prices may be considered as the “value of solidarity” to be taken into account as the monetary reference of the social housing welfare policies aimed at reducing social inequities. Scientific production in clinical medicine and international collaboration networks in South American countries
2012
Background: International collaboration is increasingly used in biomedical research. Aim: To describe the characteristics of scientific production in Latin America and the main international collaboration networks for the period 2000 to 2009. Material and Methods: Search for papers generated in Latin American countries in the Clinical Medicine database of ISI Web of Knowledge v.4.10 - Current Contents Connect. The country of origin of the corresponding author was considered the producing country of the paper. International collaboration was analyzed calculating the number of countries that contributed to the generation of a particular paper. Collaboration networks were graphed to determine …
