Current Account Adjustment and Retained Earnings
2018
This paper develops a formal strategy to calculate current accounts with retained earnings (RE) on equity investment and analyzes their adjustment during the global financial crisis. RE are the part of companies' profits which are reinvested and not distributed to shareholders as dividends. International statistical standards treat RE on foreign direct investment and RE on portfolio investment differently: while the former enter the current and financial account, the latter do not. We show that this differential treatment strongly affects current accounts of several advanced economies, frequently referred to as financial centers, with large positions in equity (portfolio) investment. Our em…
To correct or not correct the erroneous utterances of children: teacher‐initiated organisation of repair in the L2 pre‐primary education classroom
2010
ABSTRACT The research reported on a qualitative study of feedback given in one Finnish pre‐primary education group which integrated English into the programme as a first foreign language. The study was based on the authentic video‐recorded observations of actual pre‐primary teaching sessions (N = 11 lessons). The findings suggested that the reactions of the teachers to child errors depended on the types of errors made by children. The study discussed the tension present in feedback giving when balancing between the aim of maintaining the early interest of children in language learning and the purpose of paying attention to correct ways of using the target language. The data were analysed by…

2017
Classical Archeology Clashing with the World of Diplomacy: the Case of Salomon Reinach in 1881 Studies on the ties between archeology and diplomacy focus mostly on the way a few individuals reconciled a double career and realized the ideal of a hybrid figure: the diplomat as archeologist. Less attention has been paid to the relations, on a daily basis, between classical archeology and the world of consulates and embassies in the Eastern Mediterranean. Most of the time, one relies on the widespread cliché of the archeologist as a victim of bureaucracy. The case studied here is that of Salomon Reinach (1858-1932) and his abundant correspondence, held by the bibliothèque Méjanes (Aix-en-Proven…
CLIL modules and their affective impact on students with high English anxiety and low self-efficacy
2019
Many studies in recent years focused on the efficiency of bilingual education in different school settings. If a school pursues a regular implementation of CLIL modules instead of the establishment of proper CLIL streams, the student group that is affected by this teaching approach is much more diverse when compared to the preselected CLIL stream groups. In this regard, also students with high English anxiety and low self-efficacy will have to participate in the modules and it is particularly interesting to see how these student types deal with teaching units held in a foreign language. The study at hand presents results from an intervention at German schools with two biology units taught i…
Self-Efficacy in L2: A Research Proposal
2013
Self-efficacy is one’s belief that they can accomplish a task or a set of tasks (Bandura 1997). The key role of such beliefs in human functioning is that “people’s level of motivation, affective states, and actions are based more on what they believe than on what is objectively true” (Bandura 1997: 2). They provide the foundation not only for human motivation, but also for personal accomplishment and well-being. Self-efficacy is rooted in four sources: mastery experience, the vicarious experience of observing others, social persuasion, and affective states. The first one refers to the positive assessment or interpretation of one’s own previous attainment in tasks related to the one at hand.…
Self-regulatory Efficacy and Foreign Language Attainment
2016
The foreign language learning process is lengthy and full of obstacles, while the most significant learning effects are quite delayed in time, and difficult to notice on a day-to-day basis. For this reason perseverance in self-controlling efforts may be of crucial importance to language success. It allows for a steady linguistic and cultural development of the student, allowing him to enjoy diverse, even contradictory opinions, leading to ultimate language success. The results of the research carried out with Polish secondary grammar school students (N = 621) demonstrate that only in reference to self-assessment of FL skills students with high levels of self-regulated efficacy significantly…

Foreign direct investment and the rule of law in Africa in the context of legal integration
2018
This essay focuses on the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the rule of law in the context of legal integration in Africa, outside of the AfCFTA agreement. Specifically, the essay investigates the concept of the rule of law, taking into account its ‘dynamic’ side, that is the power to shape and model the structure of a state using the example of OHADA. The OHADA framework shows that the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and the rule of law is not unilateral but a ‘two-way mutual’ relationship where both actors contribute to the success of the system, adapting to each other in order to achieve their respective goals.
