Extramammary Paget Disease of the Axilla Associated With Comedo-like Apocrine Carcinoma In Situ.

2002

Extramammary Paget disease of the axilla with underlying apocrine carcinoma has been reported only in six cases until now. This report deals with a seventh case characterized by the unique finding of comedo-like features evocative of large cell ductal breast carcinoma within an otherwise typical in situ apocrine carcinoma. This is characterized by spiral-shaped foci of epithelial proliferation with decapitation secretion and central masses of necrotic debris. A possible connection between the solid neoplasm and the overlying Paget disease is illustrated by a few apocrine-follicular units colonized by both the Paget cells and the structured adenocarcinoma. Here, although they display the sam…

Relation of elastosis to biochemical and immunohistochemical steroid receptor findings, Ki-67 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) immunostain…

1993

We studied 1073 cases of invasive ductal breast cancer, NOS for their elastic content (DEL, ductal+periductal elastosis; TEL, tumour elastosis) and compared the findings with the results of biochemical and immunohistochemical steroid hormone receptor examination. Tumours of patients up to 50 years of age and older were examined separately. In a number of tumours elastosis was also examined in relation to Ki-67 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) immunostaining. Sensitivity and specificity of DEL and TEL for predicting the receptor, Ki-67 and EGFR findings were estimated. Sensitivity of DEL and TEL for oestrogen and progesterone receptors is dependent on the degree of tumour differen…

Endometrial stromal sarcomas: immunohistochemical, electron microscopical and cytogenetic findings in two cases.

1999

Uterine sarcomas are approximately 3% of all malignant uterine corpus tumours. Of these, the tumours that originate solely in the stromal elements of the uterine wall are infrequent and have not been well characterized cytogenetically. We report two cases of endometrial stromal sarcomas (ESS), one low grade and one high grade, diagnosed by conventional histology, immunocytochemistry, electron microscopy and cytogenetics. Morphologically clear-cut differential structures were seen at optical, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic levels, permitting a clear differential diagnosis. The low-grade ESS expressed hormonal receptors and vimentin, whereas the high-grade ESS showed no hormone…

Tenascin expression patterns and cells of monocyte lineage: relationship in human gliomas.

2000

Stromal extracellular matrix (ECM) components are thought to play an important role in regulating invasion of human gliomas. Macrophages and microglial cells may heavily influence the integrity of the extracellular compartment of gliomas, and the affected ECM may play a key role in regulating migratory activity of both tumor cells and macrophages/microglia. The aim of this investigation was to study immunohistochemically the expression patterns of four ECM components: fibronectin, laminin, collagen IV, and tenascin (TN) in human gliomas, with special attention to TN. Our main goal was to study the possible correlation between TN expression and macrophagic/microglial infiltration in gliomas.…

Tumor del estroma gastrointestinal y schwannoma gástricos: una presentación inusual en un paciente sin neurofibromatosis

2020

The majority of gastric neoplasms are of epithelial type. Stromal tumours are the next most frequent and are most commonly gastrointestinal stromal tumours, followed by leiomyoma and schwannoma. We present an exceptional case of a patient with a gastrointestinal stromal tumour with suspicion of residual gastric disease, which was diagnosed post-operatively as a schwannoma.

Tumour-cell-endothelial interactions: free radicals are mediators of melanoma-induced endothelial cell damage

1996

Damage to vascular endothelium may play an important role during metastasis. We used a three-dimensional model of tumour cell extravasation to test the hypothesis that certain types of tumour cells are able to induce vascular endothelial cell injury. Multicellular tumour spheroids (MCTS) of 14 human cancer cell lines and spheroids from two benign cell lines were transferred onto confluent monolayers of human endothelial cells (EC). MCTS from 4 of 7 melanoma cell lines induced damage of the endothelium which was closely associated with tumour cell attachment. Endothelial cell injury became evident morphologically by loss of cell membrane integrity and sensitivity to shear stress. Similar res…

Tissue microarrays analysis in chondrosarcomas: light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and xenograft study

2008

Abstract Background Chondrosarcoma (Chs) is the third most frequent primary malignant tumour of bone and can be primary or secondary, the latter results mainly from the malignant transformation of a benign pre-existing tumour. Methods All the cases diagnosed as Chs (primary tumours, recurrences and/or metastasis and xenotransplanted Chs) from the files of our Department were collected. Only cases with paraffin blocks available were selected (Total 32 cases). Six Tissue Microarrays (TMAs) were performed and all the cases and biopsies were distributed into the following groups: a) only paraffin block available from primary and/or metastatic tumours (3 TMAs), b) paraffin block available from p…

Comparison of Histochemical Staining Methods and Correlation with Transient Elastography in Acute Hepatitis.

2014

Objective: To compare Masson's trichrome (MT), Sirius red (SR) and orcein staining in acute hepatitis (AH) and to correlate them with transient elastography (TE), a noninvasive method to assess hepatic fibrosis. Methods: We evaluated liver stiffness by TE in a cohort of 34 consecutive patients and assessed MT-, SR- and orcein-stained biopsies using the METAVIR scoring system and digital image analysis (DIA). Results: MT and SR both showed severe fibrosis (stage III-IV, DIA = 12.7%). Orcein showed absent or mild fibrosis (stage 0-II, DIA = 4.…

GLANDULAR ODONTOGENIC CYST ASSOCIATED WITH AMELOBLASTOMA: CASE REPORT AND REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE

2017

Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) associated with ameloblastoma is an exceedingly rare histologic presentation with no known clinical significance or treatment applications. Four cases have been reported, three in the mandible and one in the maxilla. The age range is 14-65 and with male predilection. All four presented with swellings and two with pain. We add one more case to the literature of a 58-year old male presenting with an expansile multilocular radiolucency between teeth #19-23. The ameloblastomatous changes in this case are consistent with those of a unicystic ameloblastoma-mural subtype. Although the histologic changes are those of a unicystic ameloblastoma, the clinical and radio…

Fibroblast and Myofibroblast Participation in Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (MFH) of Bone

1989

Eight malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH) of bone were studied with immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy. Ultrastructurally, fibroblasts and myofibroblasts were the main tumor cells in four cases and abundant in two other cases; these cells showed immunohistochemical positivity to alpha 1-antitrypsin, vimentin and anti-muscle antigen (HHF 35). Moreover, histiocytic-like tumor cells were electron-microscopically detected in four cases, being the main tumor cell type in two of the cases; immunohistochemically these cells expressed positivity to alpha-1-antichymotrypsin (A1ACT), alpha-1-antitrypsin (A1AT) and vimentin. Present results confirm the cellular heterogeneity of MFH of bone…
