Rhogocytes (pore cells) as the site of hemocyanin biosynthesis in the marine gastropod Haliotis tuberculata.

2001

Rhogocytes (pore cells) are specific molluscan cell types that are scattered throughout the connective tissues of diverse body parts. We have identified rhogocytes in large numbers in tissue taken from mantle, foot and midgut gland of the abalone Haliotis tuberculata (Vetigastropoda). Within cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum, particles are visible that resemble, in shape and size, hemocyanin molecules, the respiratory protein of many molluscs. Immunohistochemical experiments using hemocyanin-specific antibodies demonstrated that these cells contain hemocyanin. In situ hybridization with a cDNA probe specific for Haliotis hemocyanin showed that hemocyanin-specific mRNA is present in rho…

Multiparametric characterization by flow cytometry of flow-sorted subpopulations of a human hepatoma cell line useful for drug research

2004

Background Primary cultured hepatocytes are the closest model to the liver for drug research. However, to overcome its limited availability, the search for hepatic cell lines as an alternative to primary cultures is a matter of current interest. In particular, highly differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas have been proposed as in vitro tools for routine experiments in hepatotoxicity and drug metabolism. Methods Cell populations were selected by fluorescence-activated cell sorting based on low and high relative expressions of P-glycoprotein. These cell lines were characterized after 21 days in culture by multiparametric analysis with flow cytometry providing direct information on key cellu…

Diagnosing HIV infection using flow cytometry: From antigenic analyses to a specifically dedicated bead-based assay to measure viral load.

2009

SINCE the discovery of HIV in 1984 (1,2), millions have been infected and have died of AIDS. In 2006, the World Health Organization identified 40 million HIV-infected subjects, noting that antiretroviral therapy was required throughout the world (Fig. 1; http://www.who.int/hiv/data/en/index.html). Today, the situation is very similar and the HIV pandemic remains a major world health problem (3). The treatment of AIDS with highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) involves regular monitoring of different blood parameters, requiring the development of convenient and accurate methods that can evaluate HIV infection even in resource-poor countries (4,5). In addition to CD4 cell count, which …

Thermo‐Hydro‐Mechanical Model and Caprock Deformation Explain the Onset of an Ongoing Seismo‐Volcanic Unrest

2021

Acknowledgments The authors are grateful to the Editor, Prof. Ben‐Zion Yehuda, and the reviewers: Prof. Micol Todesco and an anonymous reviewer, whose comments and recommendations have significantly improved the quality of this work. The authors acknowledge the financial support of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Nigeria for this research. The comparison of our models with monitoring data was made possible by the outstanding efforts of the staff at the INGV‐Osservatorio Vesuviano, who provide weekly information about geophysical parameters at the Campanian volcanoes (http://www.ov.ingv.it/ov/en/bollettini/272-campi-flegrei-bollettini-settimanali.html). Peculiar and Unusual Drowning in Waste Oil from Motor Vehicles: Case Report

2016

Drowning is one of the most frequent causes of accidental or suicidal death, and more rarely it is associated with a homicide. Cases of drowning in water or in the sea are common. The authors report an unusual and peculiar case of drowning, that of a woman who accidentally fell inside a collection tank of waste oil of motor vehicles.
