De-naturalizing the “predatory”: A study of “bogus” publications at public sector universities in Pakistan

Predatory publishing has recently emerged as a menace in academia. University professors and researchers often exploit this practice for their economic gains and institutional prestige. The present study investigates such existing predatory publishing practices in Pakistani public sector universities using Bourdieu’s (1991) concept of symbolic violence. For this purpose, we analyzed 495 articles published by 50 university professors in the social sciences and humanities over the period 2017-2021. Internetin tarjoama suuri määrä laadultaan vaihtelevaa informaatiota on tehnyt tiedon luotettavuuden arvioinnista entistä vaikeampaa. Tiedon alkuperä, laatu ja todenmukaisuus ovat usein epäselviä, mikä vaikeuttaa asiallisen tiedon löytämistä ja sen tarkoituksen arvioimista. Kritiikitön suhtautuminen nettiteksteihin voi johtaa vääränlaisiin mielikuviin asioista ja jopa riskialttiiden päätösten tekemiseen. Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin lukiolaisten taitoja valita rokotusaiheisia nettilähteitä ja arvioida niiden luotettavuutta. This study extended current knowledge by examining students’ abilities to justify the credibility of online texts from different perspectives, thus providing a more nuanced understanding of students’ credibility evaluation ability. Exploring early adolescents’ evaluation of academic and commercial online resources related to health

This study assessed the ability of 426 students (ages 12–13) to critically evaluate two types of online locations on health issues: an academic resource and a commercial resource. The results indicated limited evaluation abilities, especially for the commercial resource, and only a small, partial association with prior stance and offline reading ability. Only about half (51.4%) of the students questioned the credibility of the commercial online resource and only about 19% of the students showed an ability to fully recognize commercial bias. Varying information quality and an increase of misinformation on the Internet accentuates the importance of supporting students’ competencies to critically evaluate information. This study compared how individuals and pairs of secondary students worked to evaluate the quality of online information across two inquiry topics. Two similar studies were conducted with 140 Finnish (Study I) and 52 US (Study II) students. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir izpētīt Latvijas un Amerikas Savienoto Valstu tiesību sistēmas kopīgās un atšķirīgās iezīmes attiecībā uz tiesas sprieduma formu un pieņemšanu pirmās instances tiesās, tiesas sprieduma nozīmi un būtību gan vēsturiskā, gan mūsdienu skatījumā. Darbā aplūkoti jautājumi par tiesas sprieduma sastādīšanas būtību un tā formu analizējot dažādu tiesību sistēmu kopīgās un atšķirīgās iezīmes. Kā galvenais secinājums ir objektīva tiesas sprieduma veidošana dažādās tiesību sistēmās.
