The electrochemical synthesis of pyrazolidine-3,5-diones and benzoxazoles by N-N bond formation and C,O linkage, respectively, represents an easy access to medicinally relevant structures. Electrochemistry as a key technology ensures a safe and sustainable approach. We gained insights in the mechanism of these reactions by combining cyclovoltammetric and synthetic studies. The electron-transfer behavior of anilides and dianilides was studied and led to the following conclusion: The N-N bond formation involves a diradical as intermediate, whereas the benzoxazole formation is based on a cationic mechanism. Novel sandwich metallacarboranes commo-[3,3'-Ni(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (1), commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2]+ (2+), commo-[3,3'-Ru(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (4) and commo-[3,3'-Fe(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (5) have been prepared by reaction of [10-SMe2-7,8-nido-C2B9H10]- with NiCl2 x 6 H2O, CoCl2, [RuCl2(dmso)4] and [FeCl2(dppe)], respectively. Reduction of 2+ with metallic Zn leads to the neutral and isolable complex commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (3). A catalytic enantioselective aza-Reformatsky reaction is reported with cyclic dibenzo[b,f][1,4]oxazepines and ethyl iodoacetate leading to the synthesis of chiral ethyl 2-(10,11-dihydrodibenzo[b,f][1,4]oxazepin-11-yl)acetate derivatives with excellent yields and high enantioselectivities (up to 98% yield and 97 : 3 er) using a readily available diaryl prolinol L4 as the chiral ligand and Me2Zn as the zinc source under an air atmosphere. Furthermore, different transformations were carried out with the corresponding chiral β-amino esters, preserving in all cases the optical purity.

The Arctic CLoud Observations Using airborne measurements during polar Day (ACLOUD) campaign was carried out north-west of Svalbard (Norway) between 23 May and 6 June 2017. The objective of ACLOUD was to study Arctic boundary layer and mid-level clouds and their role in Arctic amplification. Two research aircraft (Polar 5 and 6) jointly performed 22 research flights over the transition zone between open ocean and closed sea ice. Both aircraft were equipped with identical instrumentation for measurements of basic meteorological parameters, as well as for turbulent and radiative energy fluxes.
