A two-armed bandit collective for hierarchical examplar based mining of frequent itemsets with applications to intrusion detection

2014

Published version of a chapter in the book: Transactions on Computational Collective Intelligence XIV. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-662-44509-9_1 In this paper we address the above problem by posing frequent item-set mining as a collection of interrelated two-armed bandit problems. We seek to find itemsets that frequently appear as subsets in a stream of itemsets, with the frequency being constrained to support granularity requirements. Starting from a randomly or manually selected examplar itemset, a collective of Tsetlin automata based two-armed bandit players - one automaton for each item in the examplar - learns which items should be included in …

A new design problem in the formulation of a special moment resisting connection device for preventing local buckling

2021

In the present paper an improved formulation devoted to the optimal design problem of a special moment resisting connection device for steel frames is proposed. This innovative device is called a Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD) and it has been recently proposed and patented by some of the authors. It is thought to be preferably located at the extremes of the beam, connecting the beam end cross section with the relevant column. The typical device is a steel element characterized by symmetry with respect to three orthogonal barycentric planes and constituted by a sequence of three portions with abrupt cross section changes. The main novelty of the present proposal is related to the d…

Dialogue through the eyes: Exploring teachers’ focus of attention during educational dialogue

2020

Abstract This study explored teachers’ focus of attention during educational dialogue. Teachers’ focus of attention was recorded in 54 Grade 1 classrooms using Tobii Pro Glasses 2 mobile eye-tracking device. From the video recordings, episodes of educational dialogue were identified and categorised by quality. Teacher’s focus of attention on students was examined during the dialogue episodes. Results showed that teachers allocated their attention relatively unevenly among the students. More students got visual attention during high-quality educational dialogue than during moderate-quality dialogue. This study provides insight into the quality of educational dialogue by combining assessment …

On Human–Computer Interaction in Brain–Computer Interfaces

2014

In this chapter, theoretical reflections on human–computer interaction in brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) are combined with the results of an empirical investigation concerning non-invasive EEG-based BCI users’ experiences with this technology. After a short overview of transhumanist visions in the field of neurotechnology this text discusses some anthropological positions concerning interaction between man and technical devices. The focus will be on the concept of “transparency”. Then some empirical results of a pilot study which investigated BCI users’ experiences concerning human–computer interaction in BCI use are presented and discussed against the anthropological background.

Évolution des conceptions après une formation pédagogique

2008

Physics at the grocery store

2022

The motion of a food can on an accelerated conveyor belt in a grocery store is described by means of Newtonian mechanics. By assuming that the food can may roll on the conveyor belt, when the cashier starts this device, one can prove that the rolling motion, observed in the belt reference system, is such that the can is seen to move away for the cashier. Experiments can be performed with common material: an empty and a full food can, and a sheet of paper as conveyor belt.

Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects

2021

Jyväskylästä kirjoitettiin: Käyn läpi Extra-Vipusessa ristiriitaisiksi luokitettuja yhteisjulkaisuja. Julkaisu " Eight Simple Guidelines for Improved Understanding of Transformations and Nonlinear Effects" on meillä laitettu A2 ja teillä A1. Meillä varmaan päädytty tuohon A2:een kun tiivistelmässä sanotaan "Building on a systematic review of six leading management journals..". Mutta mitä mieltä olette, kumpi olisi parempi? Transforming variables before analysis or applying a transformation as a part of a generalized linear model are common practices in organizational research. Several methodological articles addressing the topic, either directly or indirectly, have been published in the rec…

Comparative Cytogenetics Allows the Reconstruction of Human Chromosome History: The Case of Human Chromosome 13

2019

Comparative cytogenetics permits the identification of human chromosomal homologies and rearrangements between species, allowing the reconstruction of the history of each human chromosome. The aim of this work is to review evolutionary aspects regarding human chromosome 13. Classic and molecular cytogenetics using comparative banding, chromosome painting, and bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) mapping can help us formulate hypotheses about chromosome ancestral forms; more recently, sequence data have been integrated as well. Although it has been previously shown to be conserved when compared to the ancestral primate chromosome, it shows a degree of rearrangements in some primate taxa; fu…
