Synthesis of vanillin in water by TiO2 photocatalysis

Abstract The photoproduction of vanillin is studied in aqueous medium starting from trans-ferulic acid, isoeugenol, eugenol or vanillyl alcohol by using both commercial and home prepared TiO2 samples as photocatalysts and batch Pyrex photoreactors. The photo-oxidation at room temperature of these compounds produces vanillin with a selectivity ranging from 1.4 to 21 mol% with respect to the converted substrate. An investigation on the intermediates was performed in the case of trans-ferulic acid; for this substrate the most important intermediates were homovanillic acid, vanillyl mandelic acid, trans-caffeic acid, formic acid, acetic acid, and oxalic acid. Abstract The assessment of the rate law of slurry photocatalytic reactions appears to be a hard task, mainly because in this type of reactions the average rate of reaction, which is experimentally observed in a real reactor, could be very different from the “true” (intrinsic) rate of reaction, which cannot be measured directly. In the present work, it is shown how a proper mathematical model allows the utilization of the differential and/or the integral methods of kinetic analysis. Abstract In this study, the potential of organic acids (formic acid, acetic acid) in a catalytical and mechanocatalytic conversion of lignocellulosic barley straw to valuable sugars is explored using sulfuric acid as a reference. Acid-catalyzed hydrolysis has been carried out with acid-impregnated samples as well as unmodified barley straw. In the mechanocatalytical approach, pretreatment consists of impregnation with the acid catalyst and mechanical treatment by ball milling following chemical hydrolysis. The protein quality of three milk-cereal-based infant foods (paps) was evaluated by determining their amino acid contents and calculating the amino acid score. Proteins were subjected to acid hydrolysis, prior to which cysteine and methionine were oxidized with performic acid. Amino acids were determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection with a prior derivatization with 6-aminoquinolyl-N-hydroxysuccinimidyl carbamate. Tryptophan was determined by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection after basic hydrolysis. Abstract Some probe catalytic photooxidation reactions with aliphatic and aromatic organic compounds having different acid strengths, i.e. methanoic acid, ethanoic acid, benzoic acid and 4-nitrophenol, were carried out in aqueous systems by using polycrystalline TiO2 powders doped with various transition metal ions (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo, V and W). The Co-doped powder showed to be more photoactive than the bare TiO2 for methanoic acid degradation while the behaviour of TiO2/Cu and TiO2/Fe was similar to that of the support. Abstract The titane–ruthenium heterobimetallic compounds ( p -cymene)[(η 5 -C 5 H 5 )(μ-η 5 :η 1 -C 5 H 4 (CH 2 ) m PR 2 )TiCl 2 ]RuCl 2 4 – 6 have been revealed to be quite good catalysts for the addition of formic acid to 1-hexyne and phenylacetylene. These preliminary results led us to synthesize new tetrametallic complexes 10 – 12 via the reaction of the titanocene phosphanes 1 – 3 with the polymer [Ru(CO) 2 (μ-O 2 CH)] n . Their catalytic ability for the enol esters formation has been studied.

Femtosecond mid-IR transient absorption spectroscopy was used to probe the vibrational dynamics of formic acid and acetic acid isolated in solid argon following excitation of the fundamental transition of the carbonyl stretching mode. Carboxylic acids form extremely stable H-bonded dimers, hindering the study of the monomeric species at equilibrium conditions. The low-temperature rare-gas matrix isolation technique allows for a unique control over aggregation enabling the study of the monomer vibrational dynamics, as well as the dynamics of two distinct dimer structures (cyclic and open chain).
