Association of Inflammation Markers with Impaired Insulin Sensitivity and Coagulative Activation in Obese Healthy Women

2003

Abstract Insulin resistance is associated with a low chronic inflammatory state. In this study we investigated the relationship between impaired insulin sensitivity and selected markers of inflammation and thrombin generation in obese healthy women. We examined 32 healthy obese women (body mass index ≥ 28), with normal insulin sensitivity (NIS, n = 14) or impaired insulin sensitivity (n = 18), and 10 nonobese women (body mass index < 25). Impaired insulin sensitivity patients had significantly higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), TGF-β1, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), activated factor VII (VIIa), and prothrombin fragment 1 + 2 (F1 + 2) compared with either control s…

Tif1γ regulates the TGF-β1 receptor and promotes physiological aging of hematopoietic stem cells.

2014

The hematopoietic system declines with age. Myeloid-biased differentiation and increased incidence of myeloid malignancies feature aging of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), but the mechanisms involved remain uncertain. Here, we report that 4-mo-old mice deleted for transcription intermediary factor 1γ (Tif1γ) in HSCs developed an accelerated aging phenotype. To reinforce this result, we also show that Tif1γ is down-regulated in HSCs during aging in 20-mo-old wild-type mice. We established that Tif1γ controls TGF-β1 receptor (Tgfbr1) turnover. Compared with young HSCs, Tif1γ(-/-) and old HSCs are more sensitive to TGF-β signaling. Importantly, we identified two populations of HSCs specifical…

Researches on the Alternative Fuels Which Can Be Used to Motors

2010

The alternative fuels are substances or materials used as fuel, other than the old conventional fuels (oil, natural gases and coals).
The paper analyses the most important alternative fuels, such as: bio-diesel, alcohols and hydrogen, presenting at each category the main important characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages presented by them.
The methyl-ester which is known as bio-diesel can be used in all motors with ignition by compression, alone or mixed in any proportion with oil, with minor modifications at the injection system. Bio-diesel fuel assures the same motor power as oil does, having even a bigger cetanic number than the usual oil. After tests, it was obser…

On the effectiveness of spif process to re-form end-of-life components as compared to conventional forming approach

2021

Manufacturing processes have a significant impact on global energy consumptions. The recovery of materials and functions for the implementation of the Circular Economy principle needs to be focused on either, by utilizing new techniques or the rethinking of old processes to rework End-of-Life (EoL) components. Previous researches have shown Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) process as a good alternative for sheet metal EoL components reuse by their reshaping. In this article, the authors aim to study the effectiveness of the SPIF processes by comparing its reshaping performance with other, more conventional forming processes. An initial Deep Drawing (DD) process was performed to imita…

Generalized power-angle control for grid-forming converters: A structural analysis

2022

Several control schemes have been recently proposed and studied as grid-forming controls for power converters. In all these schemes, the power-angle control loop is the part which defines the fundamental capabilities of the grid-forming control: that control loop governs in fact the inherent synchronization mechanism of the power converter, the power sharing with the other generation sources in the system and the oscillatory characteristics of the converter-based resource. This article introduces a general formulation for the power-angle control characterizing the grid-forming concept for power converters. The generalized power-angle control is based on a polynomial fraction formulation, an…

Animal agency in Iron-Age Sicilian art (VIII-VI BCE): Interaccion between bovines and man

2019

El objetivo del presente artículo es el análisis de las relaciones entre bovinos y humanos bajo la perspectiva de la agencia animal a través de varios objetos artísticos encontrados en el asentamiento de Polizzello (Sicilia occidental), datados entre los ss. VIII-VI a. …

Identification of epitopes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis 16-kDa protein recognized by human leukocyte antigen-A*0201 CD8(+) T lymphocytes.

2002

CD8(+) T cells could make an important contribution to protection against tuberculosis (TB), but the antigenic determinants recognized in the context of major histocompatibility complex class I molecules remain ill defined. Our aim was to identify nonamer peptides derived from the acr/16-kDa antigen. Two immunogenic peptides (p21-29 and p120-128) were identified by their ability to elicit cytotoxic CD8(+) T cells from juvenile patients recovering from TB. Epitope-specific recognition was demonstrated by the lysis of both Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected and peptide-pulsed macrophages, the release of cytotoxic granules, and interferon-gamma and tumor necrosis factor-alpha production. CD8(…
