The Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesv (1640). Devotion, Politics and the Emblem.
2018
ABSTRACT: The Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesv (1640) is, perhaps, the most beautiful book of emblems published by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century. The book is a festive commemoration offered by the priests and students of the Flemish-Belgian Province in celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. The work includes 127 full-page emblems distributed throughout a total of 956 folio-sized pages that narrate and illustrate in emblematic fashion the foundation, development, vicisstitudes and achievements of the Socirty in its evangelical and pedagogical mission. From the moment of its publication, the Imago was the object of attacks by Huguenauts and Jansenist…
El juego de la oca
2018

2020
ABSTRACT: Although Italian influences prevail in the visual tradition of Prudence, beginning in the 15th century a new iconographic type emerges as a result of a «new visuality» deriving from French art. This innovation has been considered «monstrous» and breaking with the preceding visual tradition. However, this new visual manifestation is a result of the continuation of philosophic theories about Prudence. What is more, Italian art offers a response to the «new visuality» with another new iconographic type of the Prudence.

Emblemática, mnemotecnia y el arte de narrar: El episodio de Everardo en El peregrino en su patria de Lope de Vega
2016
ABSTRACT: This essay examines an aspect of Lope de Vega’s iconographic program in The Pilgrim, or Stranger in His Own Country by focusing on the interpolated tale of Everardo, a Christian knight who has been confined to a prison cell that is painted with «hieroglyphs and verses». The episode combines rhetorical and dialectical aspects of memory and establishes a connection between artificial memory systems, emblems, secular meditational practices, and story telling. I propose that Everardo’s tale displays a mnemonic intentionality that connects it with artificial systems of memory developed in classical antiquity and later used as prototypes during the early modern period. The episode not o…
La representació de l’arbre en l’Arbre de ciència de Ramon Llull
2017
ABSTRACT: The abundant use of graphic material in the work of Ramon Llull makes for a space where words and images intersect. The figure of the tree which Llull describes verbally in his Arbre de ciencia (1295-1296) is a complex and special case of the application of a rhetorical device called «ekphrasis». Despite the fact that the author did not envisage the possibility of making a visual representation, in the work's later transmission attempts were made to provide graphic images with results which were unsatisfactory for many reasons, of which the most important was the fact that Llull conceived of his tree as multidimensional. KEYWORDS: Llull; tree; ekphrasis. RESUM: L’us abundant de re…
