Stochastic ship roll motion via path integral method
2010
ABSTRACTThe response of ship roll oscillation under random ice impulsive loads modeled by Poisson arrival process is very important in studying the safety of ships navigation in cold regions. Under both external and parametric random excitations the evolution of the probability density function of roll motion is evaluated using the path integral (PI) approach. The PI method relies on the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, which governs the response transition probability density functions at two close intervals of time. Once the response probability density function at an early close time is specified, its value at later close time can be evaluated. The PI method is first demonstrated via simple …
Six lettres de Giuseppe Peano à Robert de Montessus de Ballore
2012
Nous transcrivons et analysons six lettres inédites que Giuseppe Peano a adressées au mathématicien français Robert de Montessus de Ballore entre 1896 et 1902. Nous montrons comment ces lettres témoignent de l'activité mathématique des deux scientifiques.
The forgotten mathematical legacy of Peano
2019
International audience; The formulations that Peano gave to many mathematical notions at the end of the 19th century were so perfect and modern that they have become standard today. A formal language of logic that he created, enabled him to perceive mathematics with great precision and depth. He described mathematics axiomatically basing the reasoning exclusively on logical and set-theoretical primitive terms and properties, which was revolutionary at that time. Yet, numerous Peano’s contributions remain either unremembered or underestimated.
Selenium contents of human milk and infant formulas in Spain.
1999
The selenium content of Spanish human milk samples and different milk-based and soy-based infant formulas has been estimated by using a flow injection hydride atomic absorption spectrometric method after microwave digestion of the organic matter. Mean values of 11.4 +/- 3.7 and 10.7 +/- 4.6 ng/ml for colostrum and transitional milk, 8.4 +/- 3.4 and 5.3 +/- 1.9 ng/ml for mature milk at 1 month and up to 2 months respectively, was obtained. These values are close to those reported by others authors in Europe, and lower than the ones from the US, Japan and Korea. Selenium contents of the analyzed infants' formulas ranged from 2.7 to 9.6 ng/ml and from 1.8 to 7.5 ng/ml for soy and milk-based in…
Mixed Circular Convolutions and Zak Transforms
2014
In this chapter the notion of mixed circular convolution is introduced. The polynomial and discrete periodic splines defined on uniform grids are special cases of such convolutions. The so-called Zak transforms provide tools to handle mixed circular convolutions
Computer simulations of a Lennard-Jones model for Ar1—x(N2)x: A prototype system for quadrupolar glasses
1998
Abstract Recent theoretical studies of orientational ordering in pure and diluted nitrogen crystals are summarized. While pure N2 has a first order phase transition from a plastic crystal to a phase with long-range orientational order, dilution with argon atoms leads to a quadrupolar glass phase. Monte Carlo simulations are used to study these phases, considering also the behavior of isolated N2 impurities in Ar crystals. It is shown that a simple model that neglects electrostatic interactions and takes only Lennard-Jones interactions into account can describe already many properties in qualitative agreement with experiment. Even the slow dynamics of the quadrupole moments can be modeled by…
Effects of different infant formula components on calcium dialysability
1999
The in vitro methods proposed for estimating calcium bioavailability can be useful in studying the effect of dietetic factors. The aim of our work was to study the possible influence of different infant formula components – calcium, phosphorus, lactose, citric acid, ascorbic acid and proteins – on calcium bioavailability, considering dialysability to be an estimate of bioavailability. The 1981 method of Miller et al. with slight modifications (concerted action no 10 – FLAIR project) was applied to 18 commercial infant formulas of six different types: adapted, follow-up, preterm, hydrolysates, lactose-free and soy-based. Significant positive linear correlations between the amount of calcium …
A combined theoretical and experimental determination of the electronic spectrum of acetone
1996
A combined ab initio and experimental investigation has been performed of the main features of the electronic spectrum of acetone. Vertical transition energies have been calculated from the ground to the ny→π∗, π→π∗, σ→π∗, and the n=3 Rydberg states. In addition, the 1A1 energy surfaces have been studied as functions of the CO bond length. The 1A1 3p and 3d states were found to be heavily perturbed by the π→π∗ state. Resonant multiphoton ionization and polarization‐selected photoacoustic spectra of acetone have been measured and observed transitions were assigned on internal criteria. The calculated vertical transition energies to the ny→π∗ and all Rydberg states were found to be in agreeme…
Quantum simulations in materials science: molecular monolayers and crystals
1999
Low temperature properties and anomalies in crystals and molecular monolayers are studied by path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. For light particles (H 2 , D 2 ) adsorbed on graphite anomalies in the transition to the low temperature √3-phases have been observed in experiments and are analyzed by PIMC. The computed thermal expansion of various crystalline materials (Si, N 2 ) is in much better agreement with experiments compared to the results obtained with purely classical simulations.
Submicrometer in-plane integrated surface plasmon cavities.
2007
International audience; The optical properties of in-plane integrated surface plasmon polariton (SPP) cavities comprised of a thin film area sandwiched between two one-dimensional Bragg SPP mirrors are investigated numerically and experimentally. We discuss the resonance condition of these cavities, and we analyze in details the physical origin of the dispersion of this resonance. On the basis of numerical results, we show that in-plane SPP cavities can be used to achieve local SPP field enhancement and antireflecting SPP layers. The numerical results are compared to near-field optical images recorded by operating a photon scanning tunneling microscope. From the near-field images recorded o…
