Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Modified Electrodes
2004
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared reflection−absorption spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry were employed to characterize polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) fabricated with poly(styrenesulfonate) as the polyanion and the polypeptides poly-l-histidine, poly-l-lysine, and poly-l-arginine as polycations. The layer-by-layer electrostatic assembly was produced onto alkanethiol-modified gold surfaces. The frequency response reveals that the effect of the number of layers seems to be related to a progressive reduction in the active area of the PEM-modified electrodes. The active area after the deposition of seven layers can be lower than 10% of its original value.…
In situ FTIR and Raman spectroelectrochemical characterization of graphene oxide upon electrochemical reduction in organic solvents
2015
Electrochemical reduction of solution cast and self-assembled graphene oxide (GO) films on Au surfaces were studied using organic solvents. During the cyclic voltammetry measurements the structural changes in the films were recorded focusing on in situ infrared and Raman techniques. Both FT-Raman and dispersive Raman spectroscopy were utilized for the reduction studies. The spectroelectrochemical results indicate that the changes in the GO structure take place in a quite narrow potential range extending from -1 to -1.7 V. Higher negative potentials gives rise to reversible changes in the spectra and are not due to reduction processes of GO but more related to changes in the electrolyte medi…
Thermal and infrared spectroscopic characterization of historical mortars
1998
Abstract The characterization of historical mortars was performed by thermal analysis (TG-DTG), simultaneous infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). The samples were taken from St. John Church (Tartu, Estonia), built in the 13th–14th centuries. The analyses are important for the restoration of the church. In reality, mortar is a very difficult system, the lime is accompanied with different hydraulic components. TG-DTG analysis and FTIR methods can be used to identify various components of mortar and to observe the reactions associated with the controlled heating at 25–900°C in dynamic air and nitrogen atmosphere. The elemental c…
Structural and optical properties of Fe and Zn substituted CuInS2 nanoparticles synthesized by a one-pot facile method
2015
We substitute indium present in the CuInS2 ternary compound by iron and zinc using a facile one-pot synthesis method. The quaternary compound of CuIn1−xMxS2 (M = Fe and Zn) was synthesized by dissolving CuCl, InCl3, FeCl3, Zn(ac)2 and SC(NH2)2 as precursors in 1-octadecene, oleylamine and oleic acid as non-coordinating, coordinating and capping agent solvents, respectively. Oleic acid, oleylamine and thiourea were used respectively as a hard Lewis base, borderline Lewis base (in comparison with oleic acid) and soft Lewis base to form appropriate complexes. The complex formation, structure, and optical properties of CuIn1−xMxS2 (M = Fe and Zn) nanoparticles were studied by Fourier transform …
Time-Resolved Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy on the Inter- and Intramolecular Orientational Dynamics in Ferroelectric Liquid Crystalline Dim…
1997
On a base of time-resolved step-scan IR-spectroscopy data, we present a detailed model of the segmental reorientation during the ferroelectric and electroclinic switching of a chiral liquid crystalline dimer. We detected that the magnitude of the motion of the molecular segments differ from each other: The tilt angle is maximal for the mesogens and minimal for the ``virtual polysiloxane backbone.'' In contrast to a recently published conjecture, we prove that in the \ensuremath{\mu}s scale the responses of different molecular segments are unambiguously synchronous with each other.
Production and Characterization of Oxyhydroxyapatites
2018
The amount and alignment of hydroxyl ions influence the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyl ions in hydroxyapatite are the most mobile and upon heating are the first to leave the lattice to form oxyhydroxyapatite. This work describes a method for producing hydroxyapatite with different amounts of hydroxyl ions, and reports on the changes in Fourier transform infrared absorption at increasing level of dehydroxylation. Detailed analysis of spectra in the 500 – 700 cm-1 range showed a peak shift for the hydroxyl ion absorption line at 632 cm-1 to 637 cm-1 and an increase in the wavenumber for the phosphate line at 575 cm-1.

Hydrothermal Processing for Increasing the Hydroxyl Ion Concentration in Hydroxyl Depleted Hydroxyapatite
2018
Thermal spraying is commercially used to produce hydroxyapatite coatings, but the high temperature depletes hydroxyl ions in the structure. To return hydroxyapatite to its original state, it is necessary to restore the hydroxyl ion content in the structure. In this work, the effect of hydrothermal treatment on the hydroxyl ions was investigated in hydroxyapatite powder and thermally sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings. Samples were hydrothermally treated at 200 °C for 24 h and 48 h. Chemical phases were determined by X-ray diffraction, functional groups and hydroxyl ion concentration was examined by Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. Results showed that hydrothermal processing of hydroxy…
Engineered Membranes for Residual Cell Trapping on Microfluidic Blood Plasma Separation Systems: A Comparison between Porous and Nanofibrous Membranes
2021
Blood-based clinical diagnostics require challenging limit-of-detection for low abundance, circulating molecules in plasma. Micro-scale blood plasma separation (BPS) has achieved remarkable results in terms of plasma yield or purity, but rarely achieving both at the same time. Here, we proposed the first use of electrospun polylactic-acid (PLA) membranes as filters to remove residual cell population from continuous hydrodynamic-BPS devices. The membranes hydrophilicity was improved by adopting a wet chemistry approach via surface aminolysis as demonstrated through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Water Contact Angle analysis. The usability of PLA-membranes was assessed through de…
Three-dimensional real-time darkfield imaging through Fourier lightfield microscopy
2020
We report a protocol that takes advantage of the Fourier lightfield microscopy concept for providing 3D darkfield images of volumetric samples in a single-shot. This microscope takes advantage of the Fourier lightfield configuration, in which a lens array is placed at the Fourier plane of the microscope objective, providing a direct multiplexing of the spatio-angular information of the sample. Using the proper illumination beam, the system collects the light scattered by the sample while the background light is blocked out. This produces a set of orthographic perspective images with shifted spatial-frequency components that can be recombined to produce a 3D darkfield image. Applying the ade…
