Branching Ratios and Spectral Functions of $\tau$ Decays: final ALEPH measurements and physics implications

2005

The full LEP-1 data set collected with the ALEPH detector at the $Z$ pole during 1991-1995 is analysed in order to measure the $\tau$ decay branching fractions. Extensive systematic studies are performed, in order to match the large statistics of the data sample corresponding to over 300 000 measured and identified $\tau$ decays. Branching fractions are obtained for the two leptonic channels and eleven hadronic channels defined by their respective numbers of charged particles and $\pi^0$'s. Using previously published ALEPH results on final states with charged and neutral kaons, corrections are applied to the hadronic channels to derive branching ratios for exclusive final states without kao…

Effects of home-based physical exercise on days at home, healthcare utilization and functional independence among patients with hip fractures : a ran…

2021

Objective To evaluate the effects of a physical exercise program on days lived at home, the use and costs of healthcare and social services mortality and functional independence among patients with hip fractures. Design Randomized controlled trial with parallel two-group design, consisting of a 12-month intervention and 12-month registry follow-up. Setting Home-based intervention. Participants Patients with operated hip fracture, living at home, aged ≥60 years, randomized into physical-exercise (n=61) or usual-care (n=60) groups. Intervention Supervised physical exercise twice a week. Main Outcome Measures The primary outcome was the number of days lived at home over 24 months. Secondary ou…

Associations of Children’s Close Reading Distance and Time Spent Indoors with Myopia, Based on Parental Questionnaire

2022

Purpose: To study the association of parents’ reports about their children’s near work and outdoor habits with myopia in their children. Methods: Data from a questionnaire study conducted in 1983 among Finnish schoolchildren were reanalyzed. Vision screening had been performed for all the schoolchildren (n = 4961) in the 1st, 5th, and 8th grades (7-, 11-, and 15-year-olds) in an area of Central Finland. The questionnaire, including information about myopia, was returned by 4305 (86.7%) participants. Items concerned parents’ estimates of their child’s habitual reading distance, time spent indoors as compared with age peers, daily near work, outdoors time, and parents&…

Fractional viscoelastic transversally isotropic Timoshenko beam

2014

In this paper the viscoelastic behavior of pultruded beams has been examined. Pultruded beams are constituted by a polymer infilled with reinforcement in longitudinal direction, while in the orthogonal direction no fiber are present for technological reasons. As a consequence the material has two different behaviors in longitudinal and in orthogonal directions. It follows that pultruded beams are transversally isotropic, and the shear deformation may not be neglected. Based upon the previous observations and assuming for Creep and/or Relaxation test the power law, the constitutive equations are ruled by fractional operators. From constitutive laws, and assuming the Timoshenko beam theory to…

The resonant state at filling factor {\nu} = 1/2 in chiral fermionic ladders

2017

Helical liquids have been experimentally detected in both nanowires and ultracold atomic chains as the result of strong spin-orbit interactions. In both cases the inner degrees of freedom can be considered as an additional space dimension, providing an interpretation of these systems as synthetic ladders, with artificial magnetic fluxes determined by the spin-orbit terms. In this work, we characterize the helical state which appears at filling $\nu=1/2$: this state is generated by a gap arising in the spin sector of the corresponding Luttinger liquid and it can be interpreted as the one-dimensional (1D) limit of a fractional quantum Hall state of bosonic pairs of fermions. We study its main…
