Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in Spain: The Spanish National Health Service under scrutiny
2012
Early in the 2000s, a countrywide health services research initiative was launched under the acronym of Atlas VPM: Atlas of Variations in Medical Practice in the Spanish National Health System. This initiative aimed at describing systematic and unwarranted variations in medical practice at geographic level-building upon the seminal experience of the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care. The paper aims at explaining the Spanish Atlas experience, built upon the pioneer Dartmouth inspiration. A few selected examples will be used along the following sections to illustrate the outlined conceptual framework, the different factors that may affect variation, and some methodological challenges.
Seasonal pattern and amplitude: a logical framework to analyse seasonality in tourism. An application to bed occupancy in Sicilian hotels
2011
Many studies have investigated seasonality in tourism in terms of its causes and impacts, from both theoretical and applied perspectives. However, the definition of seasonality and, most of all, its application and measurement have not received the same degree of attention. In recognizing that seasonality has two main facets – pattern and amplitude – this paper critically examines the main seasonality measures proposed in the tourism literature, classifying them according to their properties and their most appropriate use. The framework then proposed is used to analyse a standard and comparable efficiency measure, such as the bed occupancy rate of Sicilian accommodation establishments, pla…

Security framework for dynamic service-oriented IT systems
2018
The paper proposes a framework for dynamic service-oriented IT systems security. We review the context of service-oriented architecture (SOA), which constitutes a paradigm of dynamic system configuration including security constraints at the system module development stage, supporting with the domain-driven resources, carrying out routine SOA maintenance and implementing XML-compatible parsing technologies in order to improve the system performance. Likewise, we discuss the fundamental differences between security management systems with traditional centralized and monolithic architecture and service-oriented IT systems from the perspective of security-related issues. Web services security …
Estimating the non-market benefits of water quality improvement for a case study in Spain: A contingent valuation approach
2012
Abstract This article addresses an important topic related to the application of the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) in Spanish watersheds. Results on a contingent valuation study, aimed to assess the non-market benefits of water quality improvements in the Guadiana river basin (GRB), are shown. Special attention has been paid to the issue of zero willingness-to-pay (WTP) responses, while addressing the possible presence of self-selection caused by protest responses. The results (i) indicate that sample selection bias is not a problem in our application, (ii) allow us to identify some key determinants of voting behaviour, and (iii) through the use of different econometric models al…
Adsorptive Separation of CO2 by a Hydrophobic Carborane-Based Metal-Organic Framework under Humid Conditions
2023
We report that the carborane-based metal-organic framework (MOF) mCB-MOF-1 can achieve high adsorptive selectivity for CO2:N2 mixtures. This hydrophobic MOF presenting open metal sites shows high CO2 adsorption capacity and remarkable selectivity values that are maintained even under extremely humid conditions. The comparison of mCB-MOF-1' with MOF-74(Ni) demonstrates the superior performance of the former under challenging moisture operation conditions.
Sesquilinear forms associated to sequences on Hilbert spaces
2019
The possibility of defining sesquilinear forms starting from one or two sequences of elements of a Hilbert space is investigated. One can associate operators to these forms and in particular look for conditions to apply representation theorems of sesquilinear forms, such as Kato's theorems. The associated operators correspond to classical frame operators or weakly-defined multipliers in the bounded context. In general some properties of them, such as the invertibility and the resolvent set, are related to properties of the sesquilinear forms. As an upshot of this approach new features of sequences (or pairs of sequences) which are semi-frames (or reproducing pairs) are obtained.
Frame analysis of psychotherapists’ perspectives on the development of psychological disorders
2021
AbstractThe development of psychological disorders has been explained by several psychological theories and remains under debate. Psychotherapists, however, have insights into the emergence and development of psychological disorders that stem from both theory and practice. The constantly evolving field of psychotherapy prompts reconsideration, specifically when psychotherapists’ views on the development of disorders impacts their treatment approach. In addition, theoretical orientation and years of clinical experience, while known to influence psychotherapists’ viewpoints also merit further study. Applying Erving Goffman’s frame analysis, semi structured interviews with psychotherapists wer…
The sequencing of the complete genome of a Tomato black ring virus (TBRV) and of the RNA2 of three Grapevine chrome mosaic virus (GCMV) isolates from…
2014
The complete genome of a Tomato black ring virus isolate (TBRV-Mirs) (RNA1, 7,366 nt and RNA2, 4,640 nt) and the RNA2 sequences (4,437; 4,445; and 4,442 nts) of three Grapevine chrome mosaic virus isolates (GCMV-H6, -H15, and -H27) were determined. All RNAs contained a single open reading frame encoding polyproteins of 254 kDa (p1) and 149 kDa (p2) for TBRV-Mirs RNA1 and RNA2, respectively, and 146 kDa for GCMV RNA2. p1 of TBRV-Mirs showed the highest identity with TBRV-MJ (94 %), Beet ringspot virus (BRSV, 82 %), and Grapevine Anatolian ringspot virus (GARSV, 66 %), while p2 showed the highest identity with TBRV isolates MJ (89 %) and ED (85 %), followed by BRSV (65 %), GCMV (58 %), and GA…
Improved acid tolerance of a recombinant strain of Escherichia coli expressing genes from the acidophilic bacterium Oenococcus oeni.
2001
Aims:Oenococcus oeni is a lactic acid bacterium used in wine fermentation. Two open reading frames (orfB and orfC) were identified in the upstream region of the hsp18 gene, encoding the small heat-shock protein Lo18. Expression of these genes in conditions of acid stress was studied in Escherichia coli. Methods and Results: Sequence analysis showed that orfB encodes a putative transcriptional regulator of the LysR family. The protein encoded by orfC shares homologies with multi-drug resistance systems. Heterologous expression of orfB, orfC and hsp18 genes in Escherichia coli significantly enhanced the viability of the host strain under acidic conditions. Conclusions: It was demonstrated tha…
