Integrating multiple stressors in aquaculture to build the blue growth in a changing sea

2017

Fisheries currently represent the main source of animal protein intake worldwide, although catches of most commercial species are at or beyond maximum sustainable yields. Increasing production would require an excess of exploitation levels and aquaculture is expected to become crucial in sustaining a growing seafood demand. Nonetheless, many threats are expected to affect aquaculture and the increased production must evolve in a way that minimizes environmental and socio-economic impacts. The claimed sustainable development of human activities at sea (blue growth and economy) seeks for new joint analyses and solutions at (trans-)national systemic level should be planned and applied. To meet…

Assessment of the ecological status of transitional waters in Sicily (Italy): first characterisation and classification according to a multiparametri…

2010

A 1-year cycle of observations was performed in four Sicilian transitional water systems (Oliveri-Tindari, Cape Peloro, Vendicari and Marsala) to characterise their ecological status. A panel of variables among which trophic and microbial (enzyme activities, abundance of hetetrophic bacteria and of bacterial pollution indicators) parameters, were selected. Particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) and chlorophyll-. a (Chl-. a) contents defined the trophic state, while microbial hydrolysis rates and abundance gave insights on microbial community efficiency in organic matter transformation and on allochthonous inputs. To classify the trophic state of examined waters, the synthetic t…

PROSPETTIVE E CRITICITÀ SUL RUOLO DEL BENTHOS MEDITERRANEO NELLA DIRETTIVA SULLA MARINE STRATEGY

2013

In Europe, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD) are the main regulations for the protection of water bodies. The translation of their principles into valid and practical approaches is the main challenge for the scientific community. An additional and even more severe problem is related to the MSFD application in the Mediterranean area. The aim of the present contribution is to picture the present situation in Italy, as far as the benthic communities in the MSFD are concerned, pinpoint some conceptual and practical critical points, and possibly suggest some new tools useful for the definition of Good Ecological Status (GES).

A proposal for improving the elastic behaviour of dogbone

2022

The Reduced Beam Section (RBS) connections are one of the prequalified connections approved by international standards and adopted to improve the seismic behaviour of steel Moment Resisting Frames (MRF) also protecting the joint between beams and columns. This goal is reached by locally reducing the resistance of a selected portion of the beam element by suitably trimming the flanges, to promote in that portion the onset of plastic deformations. In the framework of RBS, the most important typology proposed is the so-called dogbone (DB) connections that are widely diffused in seismic engineering. The essential advantages of DB are related to the protection of the welded cross section between…

Parametric Experiments in Architecture : a Connection Joint Design for Sustainable Structures in Bamboo

2023

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the use of bamboo in the building industry. It systematically demonstrates bamboo’s utility in terms of its properties, describing the material properties of typical industrial bamboo products, and discussing their performance evaluation and optimization as building components and in the creation of building envelopes. The book presents the recent developments regarding the innovative ways to design and represent architecture through parametric survey tools, and describes the experimental geometrical-generative design process of a connection joint for free-form lightweight structures employing beams made of bamboo culms. It examines algorithmic-g…

Genetic Optimization for the design of seismic retrofitting of plane RC frames with Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs)

2021

The increasing development of computational power in modern digital devices has spread the use of structural optimization in design applications of different fields of engineering problems. This approach exposes engineers to challenging design procedures aimed to optimize all variables to satisfy the imposed requirements, finding the “optimal” solution. Despite this wide use, the application of optimization algorithms for the design of seismic retrofitting strategies becomes tougher, due to the difficulties in finding a mathematical expression which includes and combines all the key variables (i.e., cost, safety, sustainability, design) and the nonlinearity of the analysis. In this paper, t…

Out of plane fragility of infill walls with and without prior in-plane damage

2019

The paper presents the results of a probabilistic assessment framework aimed at evaluating out-of-plane fragility curves of infill walls which have suffered (or not) prior in-plane damage. Out-of-plane incremental dynamic analyses are performed based on a suite of 22 ground motion records. A recently developed in-plane / out-of-plane macroelement model is used to model masonry infills within frames. The outcomes show fragility curves representing the probability of exceeding out-of-plane collapse at a given earthquake intensity as a function of a different combination of geometrical and mechanical parameters, in-plane damage level and supporting conditions.

Infilled frames: Influence of vertical load on the equivalent diagonal strut model

2008

The influence of masonry infills on framed structures behaviour is a central topic in the seismic design procedures and in the hazard evaluation of existing buildings. Many models use equivalent strut elements in order to represent the infill but among the several parameters influencing the interaction between frame and infill the level of vertical loads is hardly considered. Nevertheless, neglecting this effect may produce inaccuracy because the axial deformations of the loaded columns can produce non-negligible variation in the contact region between infill and surrounding frame, influencing the seismic response of the infilled frame. It can easily been observed that, when this regions ex…
