Intelligent Sampling for Vegetation Nitrogen Mapping Based on Hybrid Machine Learning Algorithms
2021
Upcoming satellite imaging spectroscopy missions will deliver spatiotemporal explicit data streams to be exploited for mapping vegetation properties, such as nitrogen (N) content. Within retrieval workflows for real-time mapping over agricultural regions, such crop-specific information products need to be derived precisely and rapidly. To allow fast processing, intelligent sampling schemes for training databases should be incorporated to establish efficient machine learning (ML) models. In this study, we implemented active learning (AL) heuristics using kernel ridge regression (KRR) to minimize and optimize a training database for variational heteroscedastic Gaussian processes regression (V…
Impact of e-government on transaction cost and FDI inflows: A proposed conceptual framework
2011
Published version of an article in International Journal of Business and Management, 6(11), 285-296. Also available from the publisher at http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/ijbm.v6n11p285 Although vast normative e-government literature supports the assertion that implementation of e-government reduces transaction cost and promotes Foreign Direct Investment; empirical evidence to support this thesis is limited. Even more, there is limited attempt when studying this phenomenon to integrate e-government literature with other literatures in which major constructs of interest are rooted. This article contributes to reducing this gap by establishing a conceptual framework that integrates e-government lite…
Does cooperation affect service delivery costs? Evidence from fire services in Norway
2017
The objective of this study is to develop our understanding of how cooperation between local governments affects service delivery costs. The current study provides three contributions to the existing literature: (1) we assess the relation between inter-municipal cooperation and service delivery costs for fire services; (2) we evaluate whether different forms of cooperation affect costs differently; and (3) we analyse how the number of cooperation partners affects the cooperation–cost relation. Theoretically, it is argued that cooperation promotes scale economies, but that increasing transaction costs from additional cooperation partners may outweigh these potential benefits. The data show t…
Formal Contractual Agreements: A Transaction Cost Study of Tanzania Firms
2011
This is exploratory study that aims at examining formal contractual agreements for firms in Tanzania using Transaction cost theoretical approach. Transaction cost studies have rarely being done on firms in Africa and Tanzania in particular. Sampling frame used is from Tanzania revenue authority records for registered business 2008-2010. The study is centered on business - to business buyer -seller relations. Primary data were collected from buying side of this business relationship. Random sample of n =150 buyers were contacted through telephone calls and questionnaire were delivered personally. The response rate was about 65%. The findings suggest Transaction cost theoretical framework to …
Molecular characterization of an inducible p-coumaric acid decarboxylase from Lactobacillus plantarum: gene cloning, transcriptional analysis, overex…
1997
By using degenerate primers designed from the first 19 N-terminal amino acids of Lactobacillus plantarum p-coumaric acid decarboxylase (PDC), a 56-bp fragment was amplified from L. plantarum in PCRs and used as a probe for screening an L. plantarum genomic bank. Of the 2,880 clones in the genomic bank, one was isolated by colony hybridization and contained a 519-bp open reading frame (pdc gene) followed by a putative terminator structure. The pdc gene is expressed on a monocistronic transcriptional unit, which is transcribed from promoter sequences homologous to Lactococcus promoter sequences. No mRNA from pdc and no PDC activity were detected in uninduced cell extracts, indicating that the…
TheSCH9 protein kinase mRNA contains a long 5′ leader with a small open reading frame
1993
The SCH9 yeast gene, that was previously identified as a suppressor of cdc25 and ras1- ras2-ts temperature-sensitive mutants, encodes a putative protein kinase that positively regulates the progression of yeast cells through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. We have determined the structure of the SCH9 transcription unit, using primer extension and S1 mapping techniques. The corresponding mRNA included an unusually long 5' region of more than 600 nucleotides preceding the major open reading frame (ORF). While the latter corresponded to a protein of 824 amino acids, an upstream open reading frame (uORF) within the 5' leader could potentially encode a 54 amino acid peptide. To investigate the r…
The dnaK operon of Streptomyces coelicolor encodes a novel heat-shock protein which binds to the promoter region of the operon
1995
Transcriptional studies have demonstrated that the dnaK gene of Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) is contained within a 4.3 kb operon. The operon is transcribed from a single (transiently) heat-inducible promoter, dnaKp, that resembles the typical vegetative (sigma 70-recognized) eubacterial consensus promoter sequence. dnaK transcription was found to be heat-inducible at all stages of development in surface-grown cultures. In addition, at the normal growth temperature of 30 degrees C, dnaK transcript levels were shown to vary at different stages of development, being more abundant in young germinating cultures and in mycelium undergoing sporogenesis. The nucleotide sequence of the dnaK operon …
Analysis of expression of the gene encoding for the nuclear autoantigen La/SS-B using reporter gene constructs.
1998
In earlier studies mRNA isoforms encoding for the nuclear autoantigen La were identified. In an alternative La mRNA form the exon 1 was replaced with the exon 1'. Moreover, exon 1' La mRNAs were found to start at different 5'-regions. In dependence on the 5'-start the exon 1' La mRNAs encoded for up to three open reading frames upstream of the La frame, which starts in the exon 2. The exon 1' was located in the intron about 70 nts downstream of the exon 1. The exon 1' La mRNA was proposed to be the result of a promoter switch in combination with an alternative splicing mechanism. The commonly used technique to study the expression of a eucaryotic gene is to fuse a reportergene immediately d…
A new glucose-repressible gene identified from the analysis of chromatin structure in deletion mutants of yeast SUC2 locus.
1991
We have previously shown that some changes occur in the chromatin structure of the 3' flank of the yeast SUC2 gene in going from a repressed to an active state. In an attempt to find out the causes of these changes, we have carried out experiments in which mutant copies of SUC2 locus lacking either 5' or 3' flanks have been analysed for their transcriptional activity and chromatin structure. These experiments allowed us to discard any relationship between SUC2 transcription and chromatin changes within its 3'flank. Sequencing of this flank and mRNA analysis, however, resulted in the location of a putative peroxisomal 3-oxoacyl-CoA thiolase gene (POT1), which is repressible by glucose. The d…
