How domain-sensitive are existential constructions? Evidence from Swedish and Dutch weather reports

2020

International audience; [Introduction] Over the last two decades, linguists have shown considerable interest in the advantages of CxG-theories for various linguistic sub-disciplines. A particular question that has arisen within more “applied” frameworks, is whether or not constructions can have domain-specific manifestations regarding meaning and/or form (Fischer/Nikiforidou 2015; Bücker/Günther/Imo 2015; Gautier/Bach 2019). However, sufficient empirical analyses are currently missing, and this research question needs to be more systematically tested for constructions in various languages and different LSP-oriented domains. Beside the mere “applied” focus, such work can lead to interestin…

Improving data quality in construction engineering projects : an action design research approach

2014

Aurthor's version of an article in the journal: Journal of Management in Engineering. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)ME.1943-5479.0000202 The topic of data and information quality (DQ/IQ) is a longstanding issue of interest in both academia and practice in the construction engineering field. Poor DQ/IQ has led to poor engineering drawings that, in turn, have led to delays and, eventually, cost overruns. In this paper, a study is reported that took an action design research (ADR) approach to develop and evaluate a DQ/IQ assessment tool, which is called the information quality system (IQS), in a large global engineering and construction company. The eval…

Viable Systems Approach and Consumer Culture Theory: A Conceptual Framework

2013

The aim of this study is to depict the relational dynamics between the firm/ brand and the individual/consumer or communities of consumers. To this aim we propose a conceptual framework, integrating the viable systems approach (VSA) with consumer culture theory (CCT), which considers the individual as an active co-maker of the product/brand (‘prosumer’). The VSA view of the firm overcomes the limitations of CCT research, which is mainly focused on the individual, giving little consideration to the other actors in the context. Among the different approaches under the umbrella of viable systems we chose the VSA because of its emphasis on the analysis of the systemic external relations with th…

Geographical cues: evidences from New and Old World countries' wine consumers

2020

PurposeThis systematic review aims to investigate how geographical cues affect wine consumers' behaviors, with reference to the New and Old Worlds, and accordingly, how are recent consumption patterns and new consumer profiles modifying roles of geographical cues?Design/methodology/approachThis work employed a systematic literature review methodology on the extant literature published from 2009 to 2019.FindingsResults, summarized in a conceptual framework, emphasize five thematic areas on how geographical cues should be considered for future research and for new marketing strategies to capture consumers of New and Old World wines. Consumers' wine knowledge, socio-ethno-demographic factors, …

Orbits of bounded bijective operators and Gabor frames

2020

This paper is a contribution to frame theory. Frames in a Hilbert space are generalizations of orthonormal bases. In particular, Gabor frames of $L^2(\mathbb{R})$, which are made of translations and modulations of one or more windows, are often used in applications. More precisely, the paper deals with a question posed in the last years by Christensen and Hasannasab about the existence of overcomplete Gabor frames, with some ordering over $\mathbb{Z}$, which are orbits of bounded operators on $L^2(\mathbb{R})$. Two classes of overcomplete Gabor frames which cannot be ordered over $\mathbb{Z}$ and represented by orbits of operators in $GL(L^2(\mathbb{R}))$ are given. Some results about opera…

Perspectives on Cluster Evolution: Critical Review and Future Research Issues

2015

The past two decades have witnessed an ever-growing scholarly interest in regional clusters. The focus of research has mainly been on why clusters exist and what characteristics “functioning” clusters hold. Although the interest in more dynamic views on clusters is not new, in recent years, however, more attention has been paid to providing better explanations of how clusters change and develop over time, giving rise to an increasing popularity of different variants of the cluster life cycle approach. This article offers a critical review of various cluster life cycle models. We discuss the key ideas and arguments put forward by their main protagonists and we identify several shortcomings –…

A conceptual framework for ubiquitous mobile environments.

2008

The aim of this paper is to reflect upon and develop a conceptual framework that addresses the relationship between real and virtual life, with a particular focus on mobile gaming as one potential methodology for learning. The comprehension of the virtual-real life relationship is relevant not only to mobile gaming, but also to the ongoing discussions about and development of ubiquitous computing.

The Brave New World of development in the internetwork computing architecture (InterNCA): or how distributed computing platforms will change systems …

1998

This essay is a speculation of the impact of the next generation technological platform — the internetwork computing architecture (InterNCA) — on systems development. The impact will be deep and pervasive and more substantial than when computing migrated from closed computer rooms to ubiquitous personal computers and flexible client-server solutions. Initially, by drawing upon the notion of a technological frame, the InterNCA, and how it differs from earlier technological frames, is examined. Thereafter, a number of hypotheses are postulated with regard to how the architecture will affect systems development content, scope, organization and processes. Finally, some suggestions for where the…

The social benefits of restoring water quality in the context of the Water Framework Directive: A comparison of willingness to pay and willingness to…

2009

The Water Framework Directive (WFD) is by far the most important piece of water legislation in Europe for the coming decades. Its main aim is to achieve "good ecological status" for all water resources by 2015. The economic valuation of the non-market benefits derived from improving water quality is an important input in assisting the design and implementation of efficient and effective water management policies. In this study, the contingent valuation method has been applied with a double purpose. On the one hand, we have estimated the value of a hypothetical improvement in water quality of a river asking individuals about their willingness to pay, and on the other hand, the issue of exemp…
