The “Dean’s Squeeze” revisited: a contextual approach
2016
Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to develop a conceptual framework for identifying the primary tensions that business school dean’s encounter when moving between different university contexts.Design/methodology/approach– The paper is part of a larger research project on the development of business schools. This conceptual paper builds on the studies and personal experiences of business schools and their management in a number of different countries, primarily in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East.Findings– The present study argues that as a response to the increasing corporatization of higher education, the university sector has fragmented into at least three identifiable…
Categorizing and assessing multi-campus universities in contemporary higher education
2016
Multi-campus universities are not a new phenomenon per se, but they have become an increasing feature of contemporary higher education systems all over the world. In the case of Northern Europe, multi-campus universities are the consequence of contraction patterns resulting from overcapacity, fragmentation and rising competition. This paper has two main objectives. First, to take stock of the existing scientific literature on multi-campus universities and, on that basis, develop a novel conceptual framework for categorizing such systems, with focus on the level of autonomy and profile enjoyed by the individual campuses composing a given system or university. Second, we provide new empirical…
Democratic Dialogue and Development: An Intellectual Obituary of Björn Gustavsen
2018
Abstract Bjorn Gustavsen, with an original professional background as a lawyer and judge in his native Norway, had a formative role in organisational development processes in Norway, Sweden, Scandinavia and the European Union over four decades. Following in the tradition of Norwegian working life research by Trist and Thorsrud, he provided the conceptual framework and practical case studies which have driven major national and international programmes. He learned from different experience of organisational change in, for example, the USA and Japan, but he identified a distinctive way forward for the European Union, where he acted as a senior adviser. In contrast to conventional Taylorist to…
The psychometric properties of the italian version of the organizational culture assessment instrument (OCAI)
2016
The Competing Values Framework (CVF) has been widely used in organizational research to assess organizational culture. The best-known instrument derived from CVF model, the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI), which measures organizational culture according to four dimensions, is generally presented as valid and reliable. However, only few studies have been conducted for the purpose of validation considering both its ipsative and Likert version; also, this instrument has never been adapted to the Italian context. We used exploratory and confirmatory analyses to examine the underlying structure of data from an Italian adaptation of the OCAI. In the first study, we performed a…
Organizational culture and performance: Moderated mediation role of engagement and supervisor humor
2019
Although all public and private organizations, business owners and leaders around the globe constantly try to improve their organization’s performance, still many organizations and industries face a decline in their performance. Achieving target performance is not an easy task and organizations still struggle with this goal, as there are many factors involved. Human capital is one of the most important factors in the productivity of organizations. Employee performance is essentially the financial or nonfinancial outcome of employees, and it is directly associated with the performance and achievements of an organization. These are the people who spin the wheels of industries. But what makes …
SPAIN: Evolution and Characteristics of the Private Sport Sector – Focus on Fitness Centres and Gyms
2017
This chapter contains a description of the evolution and main characteristics of the private sport sector in Spain. The first section outlines a panoramic vision of the structure and organizational framework of the Spanish sport sector, illustrating the established supremacy of the public sector above the voluntary and private sectors. Next, an analysis is laid out, utilising data from Section 931 of the Central Business Register of the National Institute of Statistics. This analysis includes information pertaining to the number of existing organisations, legal structures, number of employees, and territorial layouts. Once the general description of Spain’s private sport sector is covered, …
Towards a novel conceptual framework for understanding mergers in higher education
2015
ABSTRACTThis paper tries to develop a conceptual framework for a comprehensive understanding of the merger process, which is regarded as a matter of institutionalization of organizational innovation. In the framework, a number of factors affecting merger process or institutionalization of merger are identified, such as those related to environmental issues, economic benefits, institutional compatibility and human agency. The framework hopefully narrows our knowledge gap on theorizing innovation process, in general, and university merger, in particular. It also has a potential to better assist decision-makers and managers in planning and implementing university mergers.
Overview and performance comparison of grid synchronization algorithms
2014
Distributed power generation units are experiencing an impressive growth. Consequently, the amount of energy injected by non-linear loads as power converters is expected to increase. Stability and quality of the overall grid are heavily affected by performances of grid-side converters. In this paper, an overview of grid-synchronization technique is proposed. The grid-side inverter is implemented in MATLAB/Simulink® environment including current control and grid-synchronization section. Both Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) and Decoupled Double Synchronous Reference Frame (DDSRF) PLL algorithms are implemented. A performance comparison is carried out under ideal and unbalanced utility condi…
Highly stable and porous porphyrin-based zirconium and hafnium phosphonates – electron crystallography as an important tool for structure elucidation
2018
The Ni-metallated porphyrin-based tetraphosphonic acid (Ni-tetra(4-phosphonophenyl)porphyrin, Ni-H8TPPP) was used for the synthesis of highly porous metal phosphonates containing the tetravalent cations Zr4+ and Hf4+. The compounds were thoroughly characterized regarding their sorption properties towards N2 and H2O as well as thermal and chemical stability. During the synthesis optimization the reaction time could be substantially decreased under stirring from 24 to 3 h in glass vials. M-CAU-30, [M2(Ni-H2TPPP)(OH/F)2]·H2O (M = Zr, Hf) shows exceptionally high specific surface areas for metal phosphonates of aBET = 1070 and 1030 m2 g-1 for Zr- and Hf-CAU-30, respectively, which are very clos…
