Na przestrzeni wieków rozumienie problemu wykluczenia było niestateczne. Zawsze jednak pozostawało w silnym związku z epoką, kulturą, standardem życia ludzi. Przeobrażały się także poglądy dotyczące oceny moralnej działań powodujących wykluczenie społeczne. Dosyć często wykluczonych postrzegano jako „pasożytów porządnych społeczeństw”. W wielu przypadkach ekskluzję interpretowano jako wybraną drogę życia wielu mędrców. Niejednokrotnie w odniesieniu do tego samego typu społeczeństwa stosowane są odmienne, konkurujące ze sobą, modele wyjaśniania przyczyn wykluczenia i sposoby konceptualizacji tak zwanej kultury wykluczenia. However, several significant studies demonstrate that changing social structures were also responsible for the ‘social question’ of the time. This article discusses the process of canonization of two African slaves, Benedict and Anthony, who were taken to Sicily through a combination of privacy wars, the slave trade and conflicts between Christian states and the Ottoman Empire in the context of modern-era Mediterranean. Along with other "servants of God" with exemplary lives, they both joined the Franciscan Order and were elevated to the altar after their deaths, while enslaved Christians in African territory "took the turban" with some even became local Muslim authorities. Obecny wzrost populacji osób starszych staje się nowym wyzwaniem dla teologii, w tym szczególnie antropologii teologicznej i teologii pastoralnej. Problem ten nie jest obcy aktualnemu nauczaniu papieskiemu. Świadczy o tym wyrażana przez papieży św. Jana Pawła II (1978–2005), Benedykta XVI (2005–2013) i Franciszka (2013–) troska o człowieka w podeszłym wieku w okolicznościowych przemówieniach, katechezach i homiliach.
