2020

When Germinal was published in 1885, the critic classified Zola as a “socialist” writer. The author himself used this adjective many times referring to his work. At the same time, he didn’t know Marxism and was a resolute opponent to revolution, equality and the government by the people. The paper aims to explain some aspects of Zola’s “socialism” taking into account his origins, his youth experiences and the evolution of his works. This might help to understand the particular meaning done to the term by the writer.

Engineering victory and defeat: the role of social bots on Twitter during the French PresidentialElections

2018

International audience; The electoral campaigns of both Trump and Macron took place in a climate marked by accusations of “fake news”, manipulation of social media and personal attacks. Previous research has even shown that the same automated Twitter accounts were used to spread rumours to discredit both Hillary Clinton and later Emmanuel Macron, notably during the “Macron Leaks” scandal (Ferrara, 2017), which has led to accusations of orchestrated foreign infiltration in at least the French presidential campaign. Although it is difficult to distinguish (legitimate) foreign discussions of (rumours related to) French presidential candidates on Twitter on the one hand and intentional meddling…

The literary dramatic text as a corpus for historical analysis of facework activities

2016

This paper aims to justify the use of theatre plays as valid corpus to characterize aspects of Spanish socio-cultural face, specifically the historical evolution of face work in Spanish. Literature works have not always been considered as valid corpus due to its fictional nature and stylistic purpose. However, this paper aims not only to refute these two arguments against the use of plays, but also to propose different arguments that support the use of this type of corpus. In fact, it is suggested that plays, may constitute data for pragmatic analysis because they present sociocultural implications, interactional development of the action, a wide range of communicative situations and psicop…

ESTADOS PROVINCIALES Y OFICIOS DE HACIENDA EN EL REINO DE FRANCIA (SIGLOS XVI A XVIII): LOS CASOS DE BORGOÑA Y DE BRETAÑA

2014

« A Different Symons »

2015

The critical reception of critic, journalist and short-novelist A. Symons raises the question of increased specialisation incapable to acknowledge the diversity of his interests. Seen as a transitional writer between Aestheticism and early Modernism, credited with introducing French Symbolism in Britain, he is usually considered as a writer whose nervous breakdown in 1908 put an end to a promising maturity. This paper suggests that we shift the focus and the corresponding vision of Symons by assessing his reception in French-speaking countries, including his academic reception, from 1890 to 2015. Recognized by the French and the Belgians as a British poet quite early in the 1900s Symons’s f…
