The variation of the Huggins coefficient KH with the relative molecular mass M of the polymers was measured for solutions of polystyrene and of polyisobutylene and found to be most pronounced in the case of thermodynamically good solvents but vanishing at the theta-temperature, where the individual curves kH (T; M) intersect with each other. The experimental results are interpreted as a consequence of the rheological inequality of inter- and intra-molecular contacts between polymer segments. Metal triflates attracted a large interest as catalysts in the past three decades especially due to the Lewis acid properties exhibited by these compounds and the variety of the functional group transformations. Density functional theory study of the 5-pyrrolidin-2-yltetrazole-catalyzed aldol reaction

Abstract The replacement of the carboxylic acid functionality with a tetrazolic acid in the proline-catalyzed asymmetric aldol reaction between acetone and trimethylacetaldehyde has been studied using DFT methods at the B3LYP/6-31G** computational level. For the C–C bond-formation step, four reactive channels corresponding to the syn and anti arrangement of the enamine and the re and si attack modes have been analyzed. The B3LYP/6-31G** results allowed us to explain the stereoselectivity and the increase in reactivity relative to the proline-catalyzed process in DMSO.

Structure and Dynamics of NaCl in Methanol. A Molecular Dynamics Study

Abstract A recently developed flexible three-site model for methanol was employed to perform a Molecular Dynamics simulation of a 0.6 molal NaCl solution. The ion-methanol and ion-ion potential functions were derived from ab initio calculations. The structural properties of the solution are discussed on the basis of radial and angular distribution functions, the orientation of the methanol molecules, and their geometrical arrangement in the solvation shells of the ions. The dynamical properties of the solution - like self-diffusion coefficients, hindered translations, librations, and internal vibrations of the methanol molecules - are calculated from various autocorrelation functions.

Computational Analysis of n→π* Back-Bonding in Metallylene–Isocyanide Complexes R2MCNR′ (M = Si, Ge, Sn; R = tBu, Ph; R′ = Me, tBu, Ph)

A detailed computational investigation of orbital interactions in metal–carbon bonds of metallylene–isocyanide adducts of the type R2MCNR′ (M = Si, Ge, Sn; R, R′ = alkyl, aryl) was performed using density functional theory and different methods based on energy decomposition analysis. Similar analyses have not been carried out before for metal complexes of isocyanides, even though the related carbonyl complexes have been under intense investigations throughout the years. The results of our work reveal that the relative importance of π-type back-bonding interactions in these systems increases in the sequence Sn < Ge ≪ Si, and in contrast to some earlier assumptions, the π-component cannot be …

Substituent effects on axle binding in amide pseudorotaxanes: comparison of NMR titration and ITC data with DFT calculations

The binding behaviour of differently substituted diamide axle molecules to Hunter/Vögtle tetralactam macrocycles was studied with a combination of NMR titration, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments and calculations employing density functional theory (DFT), along with dispersion-corrected exchange-correlation functionals. Guests with alkyl or alkenyl chains attached to the diamide carbonyl groups have a significantly higher binding affinity to the macrocycle than guests with benzoyl amides and their substituted analogues. ABSTRACTCooperative dynamics around the glass transition leads to complex motional behavior of the individual molecules, resulting in non-exponential relaxation. The nature of this non-exponentiality is clarified theoretically as well as experimentally. The non-exponentiality may be due to heterogeneous relaxation (superposition of exponential processes with different rate constants) or homogeneous relaxation (identical intrinsically non-exponential processes). A precise definition of both limits is given. Genetic-dependency of peroxisomal cell functions - emerging aspects

This paper reviews aspects concerning the genetic regulation of the expression of the well studied peroxisomal genes including those of fatty acid beta-oxidation enzymes; acyl-CoA oxidase, multifunctional enzyme and thiolase from different tissues and species. An important statement is PPARalpha, which is now long known to be in rodents the key nuclear receptor orchestrating liver peroxisome proliferation and enhanced peroxisomal beta-oxidation, does not appear to control so strongly in man the expression of genes involved in peroxisomal fatty acid beta-oxidation related enzymes.
