Sabratha. La necropoli a Nord-Est del Teatro nell'insula 8 della Regio IV e il riuso dello spazio urbano a scopo funerario

2012

The cemetery (m 29 x 39), excavated and restored by G. Caputo in the Thirties of the twentieth century, borders westwards the cardo which leads to the Early Christian churches of Regio III, and southwards the Theatre decumanus. The burial area comprises 84 tomb sub-divo, violated or with the gravestones moved. The burial types are: 1) the forma, attested by 43 specimens, 2) the case, rectangular or anthropomorphic, with 26 specimens, 3) nine cupae, characterized by a semi-cylindrical crown placed directly on the gravestones or on a base of limestone blocks, and 4) the mound, only one example. The space organization seems to follow clear rules: all the burials are in fact concentrated in the…

Opale: Photonische Kristalle

2007

Dies erklart u.a. den brillianten Farbeindruck.

2019

The polymorphic concept of the novel and the intertextuality of the literary genres characterize the work of Georges Perec, whose writing looks into different genres, codes and models and combines them in order to preserve the singularity of each of his works. Among these W ou le souvenir d’enfance, an unclassifiable novel that alternates fiction and childhood memories, has been the result of a very difficult writing process, that genetic documents can only partly clear up. We propose to reflect on the process of re-functionalization of the adventure novel W, which appeared before as a serialized text in the journal La Quinzaine littéraire and was then integrated into the great autobiograph…

Using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the characterization of functionalized carbon nanotubes

2013

RATIONALE: Functionalization of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) generates complex systems that require the development of suitable characterization protocols. New techniques have been explored, and existing analytical and spectroscopic methods to characterize functionalized CNTs have been adapted. Presently, chemical characterization of functionalized CNTs (f-CNTs) remains a difficult task. METHODS: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) analysis is performed on f-MWCNT samples prepared via grafting or absorption of anti-oxidant (AO) molecules on both MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-OH. Covalently functionalized MWCNTs were subjected to thermal degradation and/or hydrolysis reaction before analys…

Not Only for Egg Yolk—Functional and Evolutionary Insights from Expression, Selection, and Structural Analyses of Formica Ant Vitellogenins

2014

Vitellogenin (Vg), a storage protein, has been extensively studied for its egg-yolk precursor role, and it has been suggested to be fundamentally involved in caste differences in social insects. More than one Vg copy has been reported in several oviparous species, including ants. However, the number and function of different Vgs, their phylogenetic relatedness, and their role in reproductive queens and nonreproductive workers have been studied in few species only. We studied caste-biased expression of Vgs in seven Formica ant species. Only one copy of conventional Vg was identified in Formica species, and three Vg homologs, derived from ancient duplications, which represent yet undiscovered…

Tupaia small RNAs provide insights into function and evolution of RNAi-based transposon defense in mammals

2015

Argonaute proteins comprising Piwi-like and Argonaute-like proteins and their guiding small RNAs combat mobile DNA on the transcriptional and post-transcriptional level. While Piwi-like proteins and associated piRNAs are generally restricted to the germline, Argonaute-like proteins and siRNAs have been linked with transposon control in the germline as well as in the soma. Intriguingly, evolution has realized distinct Argonaute subfunctionalization patterns in different species but our knowledge about mammalian RNA interference pathways relies mainly on findings from the mouse model. However, mice differ from other mammals by absence of functional Piwil3 and expression of an oocyte-specific …

2018

KNOWLEDGE FOR RECOVER AND VALORIZATION OF SICILIAN RURAL ARCHITECTURE The Pintorna S. Barbara farm in the Madonie mountain area The Pintorna S. Barbara farm located in the territory of Geraci Siculo (PA), a small rural village in the Madonie area, represents a relevant example of rural architecture for his constructive and typological aspects, but also for the potential that it offers in a project of compatible recover. In the same way of other farms that marks the sicilian territory, this one at the moment is in an abandonment state because of the absence of mainteinance during the last year so that it risks to be ruined. The study wants to evidence the principal materic contructive, funct…

Structural and CO [sub] 2 capture properties of ethylenediamine-modified HKUST-1 metal-organic framework

2020

The high structural and compositional flexibility of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) shows their great potential for CO2 capture and utilization in accordance with the environmental guidelines of low-carbon technology developments. HKUST-1 as one of the most intensively studied representatives of MOFs for such purposes excels because of its simplicity of production and high ability to tune its intrinsic properties by various functionalization processes. In the present work, ethylenediamine functionalization was performed for the first time in order to thoroughly investigate the amine sorption sites’ impact on the CO2 capture performance of HKUST-1. The placement of ethylenediamine moieties …

From Behavior of Water on Hydrophobic Graphene Surfaces to Ultra-Confinement of Water in Carbon Nanotubes

2021

In recent years and with the achievement of nanotechnologies, the development of experiments based on carbon nanotubes has allowed to increase the ionic permeability and/or selectivity in nanodevices. However, this new technology opens the way to many questionable observations, to which theoretical work can answer using several approximations. One of them concerns the appearance of a negative charge on the carbon surface, when the latter is apparently neutral. Using first-principles density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics, we develop here several simulations on different systems in order to understand the reactivity of the carbon surface in low or ultra-high confinement. …
