Subcellular fractionation of tissue culture cells.
2003
Cell fractionation techniques include some of the most important and widely used analytical tools in cell and molecular biology, and are essential for the development of cell-free assays that reconstitute complicated cellular processes. In addition to simple gradient systems, this unit discusses the immuno-purification of organelles, in particular endosomes. As antigens, purification can be achieved using endogenous or ectopically expressed proteins, provided that appropriate antibodies are available. Alternatively, tagged proteins can be used, when combined with anti-tag antibodies. Now that sequencing of the genomes of several organisms has been completed, biochemical strategies, and in p…
A multilayer anisotropic plate model with warping functions for the study of vibrations reformulated from Woodcock's work
2013
Abstract In this paper, a suitable model for static and dynamic analysis of inhomogeneous anisotropic multilayered plates is described. This model takes into account the variations of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate by means of warping functions. Warping functions are determined by enforcing kinematic and static assumptions at the interfaces. This model leads to: a 10×10 stiffness matrix coupling to each other the membrane strains, the bending and torsion curvatures, and the x and y-derivatives of the transverse shear strains; and a classical 2×2 transverse shear stiffness matrix. This model has been proven to be very efficient, especially when high ratios be…
Comparison of different uncertainty techniques in urban stormwater quantity and quality modelling
2011
Abstract Urban drainage models are important tools used by both practitioners and scientists in the field of stormwater management. These models are often conceptual and usually require calibration using local datasets. The quantification of the uncertainty associated with the models is a must, although it is rarely practiced. The International Working Group on Data and Models, which works under the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage, has been working on the development of a framework for defining and assessing uncertainties in the field of urban drainage modelling. A part of that work is the assessment and comparison of different techniques generally used in the uncertainty assessm…
Wastewater treatment plant design and operation under multiple conflicting objective functions
2013
Wastewater treatment plant design and operation involve multiple objective functions, which are often in conflict with each other. Traditional optimization tools convert all objective functions to a single objective optimization problem (usually minimization of a total cost function by using weights for the objective functions), hiding the interdependencies between different objective functions. We present an interactive approach that is able to handle multiple objective functions simultaneously. As an illustration of our approach, we consider a case study of plant-wide operational optimization where we apply an interactive optimization tool. In this tool, a commercial wastewater treatment …
Describing urban soils through a faceted system ensures more informed decision-making
2016
Urban areas are increasing worldwide at a dramatic rate and their soils definitely deserve more attention than they have received in the past. In urban environments, soils potentially provide the same ecosystem services as in rural and wild environments, although in some cases they are depleted of their basic functions, such as when they lose their productive and filtering capacities because of sealing, and become mere supports for infrastructures. In other cases, soils of urban areas acquire new functions that are unique to these environments. Current soil classifications fail to effectively account for the complexity of urban soils and the information that is required for their management…
Disfunzioni sessuali, farmaci antiepilettici e profilo ormonale sierico negli uomini affetti da epilessia
2012
Sexual disfunctions, antiepileptic drugs, …
2012
Sexual dysfunctions (SD) are a relatively common problem in men with epilepsy; the prevalence ranges from 38-71%. Etiology may be multifactorial and may involve both the epilepsy and the use of antiepileptic drugs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of SD in epileptic men, assessing the type of epilepsy, seizures frequency, antiepileptic drugs used, the serum hormonal profile and the presence of psychiatric disorders.
Phylogeography of a Habitat Specialist with High Dispersal Capability: The Savi’s Warbler Locustella luscinioides
2012
In order to describe the influence of Pleistocene glaciations on the genetic structure and demography of a highly mobile, but specialized, passerine, the Savi's Warbler (Locustella luscinioides), mitochondrial DNA sequences (ND2) and microsatellites were analysed in c.330 individuals of 17 breeding and two wintering populations. Phylogenetic, population genetics and coalescent methods were used to describe the genetic structure, determine the timing of the major splits and model the demography of populations. Savi's Warblers split from its sister species c.8 million years ago and have two major haplotype groups that diverged in the early/middle Pleistocene. One of these clades originated in…
The cerebral localization of executive functions
2018
Executive Functions (EFs) are a complex neuropsychological tool that can lead all action of daily-life indipendently from age. The attempt to associate specific regions of the central nervous system (CNS) with specific sensory functions, motor and cognitive skills is one of the most recurring themes in the history of neuroscience. The concept of cerebral localization of mental activities started from the formulations of beginning phrenologists in Nineteenth century, passing through the holistic conceptions and antilocalization that marked some periods of the Twentieth century, until the beginning of the new millennium, characterized by the enormous popularity of the techniques of functional…
Bērnu vadības funkcijas vecāku novērtējumā
2022
Pētījumā tika izmantota CHEXI (Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory for parents and teachers) (Thorell & Nyberg, 2008) - bērnu vadības funkciju novērtējuma aptauja, kuru latviski šobrīd adaptē Mag. Psych. Edmunds Vanags…
