L’analisi strutturale e le fasi

2019

The X13-X13.1 is one of the most considerable cubicles in the catacomb. It consists of a quadrangular funerary chamber preceded by a short dromos placed along the gallery X. The tombs are several and of different types: arcosolia for adults and children, lithic sarcophagi, pavimental graves ("formae"), and very interesting areas for ritual "refrigerium" The archaeological investigations and the structural date indicate that the duplex cubicle is the result of different phases of development, and that it was used by a numerous and wealthy family group for several generations, by the end of the fourth/beginning of the fifth to the seventh/eighth century, as it seems also indicated by the pott…

Ecclesia carinensis. Una sede episcopale alle origini del cristianesimo fra Palermo e Lilibeo; La catacomba paleocristiana di Villagrazia di Carini

2020

The Early Christian cemetery discovered by chance in Villagrazia di Carini in 1899, then forgotten and negletted, has been brought to light from the year 2000 to today thanks to the systematic teamwork of the University of Palermo and the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra (PCAS). The unexpected dimension of the site, the largest underground cemetery of Early Christianity so far known in western Sicily, has finally allowed the historiographical debate to find a meeting point on the age-old problem of the existence of ecclesia carinensis, an Early Byzantine diocese attested by the written sources up to the eighth century and disappeared after the centuries of the Islamic domination …

Premessa al volume: Il cubicolo X13 nella catacomba di Villagrazia di Carini. Indagini preliminari e interventi di consolidamento 2016-2019

2019

This book is dedicated to the archaeological excavations and to the consolidation of the structures of cubicle X13 in the catacomb of Villagrazia di Carini (PA). In 2015 the interesting funerary chamber was seriously damaged by the collapse of the ceiling; from 2016 to 2019, the realization of the recovery and restoration project by the Pontificia Commissione di Archeologia Sacra has been the occasion for the study of the rock-cut architectures and of the structural characteristics of the cubicle, one of the most remarkable private funerary spaces in the Early Christian and byzantine cemetery of Carini.

Fusayolas de la necrópolis de Olival do Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal, Portugal) : tipología, función y simbolismo

2018

2014

Due to their unique architecture and the exceptional dimensions of the largest monument in the group, the Arles-Fontvieille hypogea are among the most remarkable megalithic monuments in Europe and the western Mediterranean region. A collective research program was launched in 2013 to study these well-known monuments which have, paradoxically, been the subject of relatively few field studies since the 19th century. The research program consisted of an inventory and analysis of the grave goods and associated artefacts, as well as a number of field studies providing an improved archaeological context of a megalithic group too often thought of only in terms of funerary monuments. Various traces…

Des Vertus et du roi : relectures d'une iconographie du gouvernement : France-Italie, XIIIe-XVIIe siècles

2019

My doctoral work in the history of medieval art unfolds from a multistep process. Based on the initial finding pertaining to the pervasive use of an iconography of Virtues in the Middle Ages, something specific emerged: its presence in sites of government, as well as its common association with the powerful, be it in the civic or religious spheres. The powerful encompasses here individuals representing various types of government existing during the medieval era in the western world. These are kings, princes, members of royal families, religious and lay dignitaries, as well as tyrants and, on the other end of the spectrum, representatives of local governments. All these characters are surro…

Riflessioni sull’iconografia funeraria lilibetana nell’età di Cicerone

2021

Twenty-four, and possibly twenty-five painted stelae and aediculae were found, in different times, in the area of the necropolis of Lilybaeum (1903, 1974-1984), and further North, nearer to the ancient sea-shore (1895); most recently, two new entries enhanced the Museo Lilibeo (2009), beside two elements from decorated epitymbia. Despite previous scholarly opinions spread these artifacts over three centuries, as a whole, they can be assigned approximately to Cicero’s time. Some cross-cutting features, as a matter of fact, connect the stelae and the “Salinas” aediculae, and indicate that both date between the late 2nd and the late 1st century BC. Nevertheless, they constitue two neatly diffe…

Late Upper Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers in the Central Mediterranean: New archaeological and genetic data from the Late Epigravettian burial Oriente…

2019

AbstractGrotta d’Oriente, a small coastal cave located on the island of Favignana (Sicily, Italy) is a key site for the study of the early human colonization of Sicily. The individual known as Oriente C was found in the lower portion of an anthropogenic deposit containing typical local Late Upper Palaeolithic (Late Epigravettian) stone assemblages. Two radiocarbon dates on charcoal from the deposit containing the burial are consistent with the archaeological context and refer Oriente C to a period spanning about 14,200-13,800 cal. BP. Anatomical features are close to those of Late Upper Palaeolithic populations of the Mediterranean and show strong affinity with Palaeolithic individuals of S…
