Background and Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is an emergent cause of liver-related events(LRE). We have assessed the ability of a composite score based on clinical features, metabolic comorbidities and genetic background, to predict LRE. Methods: 546 consecutive patients with NAFLD were recruited and stratified according to FIB-4(low risk <1.3;intermedium-high risk ≥1.3). Based on our own experiences and a review of the recent literature, this article evaluates recent developments in predicting outcomes and failures of shockwave lithotripsy when treating patients with urinary tract stones. After a detailed MEDLINE research, the authors identified several variables that influence and predict extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) success. These variables may be categorized as stone variables, patient variables and operator variables. Only multivariate analysis on a large number of homogenous patients may offer an objective evaluation of the factors conditioning ESWL outcome.

Review article: Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage: Experience with 311 procedures

Percutaneous biliary drainage was performed in 296 patients on 311 occasions using a fine-needle puncture technique. In 59%, the procedure served as postoperative decompression, and in 35% for palliation of obstruction, particularly in malignant disease. Postoperative drainage for the management of postoperative complication accounted for 2.5%. In more than 80% of the patients treated, the underlying disease was malignant obstructive jaundice. In physically active postmenopausal women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has been suggested to decrease tendon diameter. We hypothesized that HRT use and physical activity are associated with Achilles tendon size and tissue structure.
