Proposed alternative phase ratio variation method for the calculation of liquid–vapour partition coefficients of volatiles

International audience; The phase ratio variation PRV method is a classical way to determine the partition coefficients of volatile compounds between their solution and vapour phases in a variety of circumstances. However, some results obtained by this method can be disappointing. A new PRV equation in which the initial liquid-phase solute concentration is replaced by the liquid-phase solute concentration at equilibrium is proposed. This proposed PRV equation is a second-order polynomial equation. Selective chemisorption of carbon monoxide by organic-inorganic hybrid materials incorporating cobalt(III) corroles as sensing components.

Twenty-one hybrid materials incorporating cobalt(III) corrole complexes were synthesized by a sol–gel process or by grafting the metallocorrole onto a mesostructured silica of the SBA-15 type. All the materials show an almost infinite selectivity for carbon monoxide with respect to dinitrogen and dioxygen in the low-pressure domain where the chemisorption phenomenon is predominant. This peculiar property is of prime importance for an application as a CO sensor. The selectivity slightly decreases at high pressures where nonselective physisorption phenomena mainly occur. On the Size Complexity of Deterministic Frequency Automata

Austinat, Diekert, Hertrampf, and Petersen [2] proved that every language L that is (m,n)-recognizable by a deterministic frequency automaton such that m > n/2 can be recognized by a deterministic finite automaton as well. First, the size of deterministic frequency automata and of deterministic finite automata recognizing the same language is compared. Newborn screening for 3-methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase deficiency: population heterogeneity of MCCA and MCCB mutations and impact on risk assessment.

New technology enables expansion of newborn screening (NBS) of inborn errors aimed to prevent adverse outcome. In conditions with a large share of asymptomatic phenotypes, the potential harm created by NBS must carefully be weighed against benefit. Policies vary throughout the United States, Australia, and Europe due to limited data on outcome and treatability of candidate screening conditions. We elaborated the rationale for decision making in 3-methylcrotonyl-coenzyme A (CoA) carboxylase deficiency (MCCD), which afflicts leucine catabolism, with reported outcomes ranging from asymptomatic to death. Three-dimensional structure of the anaphase-promoting complex.

The anaphase-promoting complex (APC) is a cell cycle-regulated ubiquitin-protein ligase, composed of at least 11 subunits, that controls progression through mitosis and G1. Using cryo-electron microscopy and angular reconstitution, we have obtained a three-dimensional model of the human APC at a resolution of 24 A. The APC has a complex asymmetric structure 140 A x 140 A x 135 A in size, in which an outer protein wall surrounds a large inner cavity. We discuss the possibility that this cavity represents a reaction chamber in which ubiquitination reactions take place, analogous to the inner cavities formed by other protein machines such as the 26S proteasome and chaperone complexes. Theileria parasites secrete a prolyl isomerase to maintain host leukocyte transformation

Infectious agents develop intricate mechanisms to interact with host cell pathways and hijack their genetic and epigenetic machinery to change host cell phenotypic states. Among the Apicomplexa phylum of obligate intracellular parasites, which cause veterinary and human diseases, Theileria is the only genus that transforms its mammalian host cells. We construct examples of pseudo-bosons in two dimensions arising from the Hamiltonian for the Landau levels. We also prove a no-go result showing that non-linear combinations of bosonic creation and annihilation operators cannot give rise to pseudo-bosons.

From pseudo-bosons to pseudo-Hermiticity via multiple generalized Bogoliubov transformations

We consider the special type of pseudo-bosonic systems that can be mapped to standard bosons by means of generalized Bogoliubov transformation and demonstrate that a pseudo-Hermitian systems can be obtained from them by means of a second subsequent Bogoliubov transformation. We employ these operators in a simple model and study three different types of scenarios for the constraints on the model parameters giving rise to a Hermitian system, a pseudo-Hermitian system in which the second the Bogoliubov transformations is equivalent to the associated Dyson map and one in which we obtain D-quasi bases.

Unifying vectors and matrices of different dimensions through nonlinear embeddings

Complex systems may morph between structures with different dimensionality and degrees of freedom. As a tool for their modelling, nonlinear embeddings are introduced that encompass objects with different dimensionality as a continuous parameter $\kappa \in \mathbb{R}$ is being varied, thus allowing the unification of vectors, matrices and tensors in single mathematical structures. This technique is applied to construct warped models in the passage from supergravity in 10 or 11-dimensional spacetimes to 4-dimensional ones.
