Mediterranean coccolith ecobiostratigraphy since the penultimate Glacial (the last 145,000years) and ecobioevent traceability

2015

The Mediterranean Sea is a miniature ocean ideal to test the response of marine ecosystems to amplified orbital and suborbital climate changes. Here we present coccolith data from a Sardinia Channel gravity core (Arcose C_33) analysed over the last 145,000 years, with a mean resolution of about 900 years. The study highlights that regional phytoplankton assemblages underwent significant modifications between the penultimate glacial and the last interglacial, as well as between the last glacial and the Holocene. The N ratio palaeoproductivity index suggests reduced productivity levels and the development of a deep nutricline during the last interglacial and the Holocene. Within the last glac…

A dynamic adjustment model of saccade lengths in reading for word-spaced orthographies : evidence from simulations and invisible boundary experiments

2021

Contemporary models of eye movement control in reading assume a discrete target word selection process preceding saccade length computation, while the selection itself is assumed to be driven by word identification processes. However, a potentially more parsimonious, dynamic adjustment view allows both next word length and its content (e.g. orthographic) to modulate saccade length in a continuous manner. Based on a recently proposed center-based saccade length account (a new regression model of forward saccade length is introduced and validated in a simulation study. Further, additional simulations and gaze-contingent invisible boundary experiments were used to study the cognitive mechanism…

Approximation of pore space with ellipsoids: a comparison of a geometrical method with a statistical one.

2018

International audience; We work with tomographic images of pore space in soil. The images have large dimensions and so in order to speed-up biological simulations (as drainage or diffusion process in soil), we want to describe the pore space with a number of geometrical primitives significantly smaller than the number of voxels in pore space. In this paper, we use the curve skeleton of a volume to segment it into some regions. We describe the method to compute the curve skeleton and to segment it with a simple segment approximation. We approximate each obtained region with an ellipsoid. The set of final ellipsoids represents the geometry of pore space and will be used in future simulations.…

Temporal Denoising of Kinect Depth Data

2012

The release of the Microsoft Kinect has attracted the attention of researchers in a variety of computer science domains. Even though this device is still relatively new, its recent applications have shown some promising results in terms of replacing current conventional methods like the stereo-camera for robotics navigation, multi-camera system for motion detection and laser scanner for 3D reconstruction. While most work around the Kinect is on how to take full advantage of its capabilities, so far only a few studies have been carried out on the limitations of this device and fewer that provide solutions to enhance the precision of its measurements. In this paper, we review and analyse curr…

Fusion of computed point clouds and integral-imaging concepts for full-parallax 3D display

2020

During the last century, various technologies of 3D image capturing and visualization have spotlighted, due to both their pioneering nature and the aspiration to extend the applications of conventional 2D imaging technology to 3D scenes. Besides, thanks to advances in opto-electronic imaging technologies, the possibilities of capturing and transmitting 2D images in real-time have progressed significantly, and boosted the growth of 3D image capturing, processing, transmission and as well as display techniques. Among the latter, integral-imaging technology has been considered as one of the promising ones to restore real 3D scenes through the use of a multi-view visualization system that provi…

Integration of large-area optical imagers for biometric recognition and touch in displays

2021

In recent years there has been an increasing interest to integrate optical sensing in mobile displays, for instance, for biometric fingerprint scanning functionality. There are several routes to incorporate optical fingerprint functionality within the full display area, each with their own benefits and challenges. Here we investigate the different integration routes using large-area, ultra-thin imagers based on organic photodiodes.

A Dataset of Annotated Omnidirectional Videos for Distancing Applications

2021

Omnidirectional (or 360°) cameras are acquisition devices that, in the next few years, could have a big impact on video surveillance applications, research, and industry, as they can record a spherical view of a whole environment from every perspective. This paper presents two new contributions to the research community: the CVIP360 dataset, an annotated dataset of 360° videos for distancing applications, and a new method to estimate the distances of objects in a scene from a single 360° image. The CVIP360 dataset includes 16 videos acquired outdoors and indoors, annotated by adding information about the pedestrians in the scene (bounding boxes) and the distances to the camera of some point…

Scatter Search for the Point-Matching Problem in 3D Image Registration

2008

Scatter search is a population-based method that has recently been shown to yield promising outcomes for solving combinatorial and nonlinear optimization problems. Based on formulations originally proposed in the 1960s for combining decision rules and problem constraints, such as the surrogate constraint method, scatter search uses strategies for combining solution vectors that have proved effective in a variety of problem settings. We present a scatter-search implementation designed to find high-quality solutions for the 3D image-registration problem, which has many practical applications. This problem arises in computer vision applications when finding a correspondence or transformation …

Population and Query Interface for a Content-Based Video Database

2002

In this paper we describe the first full implementation of a content-based indexing and retrieval system for MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 videos. We consider a video as a collection of spatiotemporal segments called video objects; each video object is a sequence of video object planes. A set of representative video object planes is used to index each video object. During the database population, the operator, using a semi-automatic outlining tool we developed, manually selects video objects and insert some semantical information. Low-level visual features like color, texture, motion and geometry are automatically computed. The system has been implemented on a commercial relational DBMS and is based on…

A Method Based on Multi-source Feature Detection for Counting People in Crowded Areas

2019

We propose a crowd counting method for multisource feature fusion. Image features are extracted from multiple sources, and the population is estimated by image feature extraction and texture feature analysis, along with for crowd image edge detection. We count people in high-density still images. For instance, in the city’s squares, sports fields, subway stations, etc. Our approach uses a still image taken by a camera on a drone to appraise the count in the population density image, using a kind of sources of information: HOG, LBP, CANNY. We furnish separate estimates of counts and other statistical measurements through several types of sources. Support vector machine SVM, classification an…
