Leaf starch and nutrient responses to stem girdling and drought stress with respect to understanding HLB (greening) symptoms in citrus

2016

The most important problem in world citrus production is the bacterial disease Huanglongbing (HLB; greening) which is caused by a phloem-limited bacterium that is vectored by a phloem-feeding psyllid. The earliest visible symptoms of HLB in leaves are an asymmetrical chlorosis referred to as "blotchy mottle", thought to be from starch accumulation from a phloem dysfunction and a decline in root health. We tested the hypothesis that such visible symptoms are not unique to HLB by stemgirdling two year-old seedling trees of 'Cleopatra' mandarin and 'Swingle' citrumelo rootstocks in the greenhouse. Girdling induced a 4-fold greater starch concentration in leaves on well-watered trees while star…

Controversy over the Mode of Growth of Cambial Cylinder

2021

Based on mathematical modelling, this review article describes the mechanism of expansion in the circumference of vascular cambium due to radial growth leading to increase in the tree-trunk diameter, and emphasizes upon the huge difference in the rate of symplastic growth of cambial initials in two different directions, viz. radial and circumferential. On the basis of anatomical evidence regarding the role of symplastic and intrusive growths, the long-standing hypothesis that the intrusive growth contributes to the increase of cambium circumference has been falsified. It has been shown with the help of mathematical calculations as well as anatomical observations that only symplastic growth …

First assessment of the rose shrimp, Parapenaeus longirostris (Lucas, 1846) in the central Mediterranean

1995

Abstract Between June 1989 and May 1990 a 1 year programme based on commercial samples and statistics was carried out to assess Parapenaeus longirostris in the Sicilian Channel (Central Mediterranean), since most trawl-fishing occurs outside the area currently covered by trawl surveys of the National Research Council Institute based in Mazara del Vallo. Fishing takes place on three distinct grounds, where three different sub-stocks belonging to the same population could be identified based on length and maturity data. Length-based methods allowed calculation of all parameters needed to fit Beverton and Holt's (1957) and Thompson and Bell's (1934) models, while natural mortality could be est…

Timing of complementary feeding and associations with maternal and infant characteristics: A Norwegian cross-sectional study.

2018

Norwegian Health authorities recommend solid food to be introduced between child age 4-6 months, depending on both the mother´s and infant's needs. The aim of this paper is to describe timing of complementary feeding in a current sample of Norwegian mother/infant-dyads and explore potential associations between timing of introduction to solid foods and a wide range of maternal and infant characteristics known from previous literature to influence early feeding interactions. The paper is based on data from the Norwegian randomized controlled trial Early Food for Future Health. In 2016, a total of 715 mothers completed a web-based questionnaire at child age 5.5 months. We found that 5% of the…

Association of leisure time physical activity and NMR-detected circulating amino acids in peripubertal girls: A 7.5-year longitudinal study

2017

AbstractThis study investigated the longitudinal associations of physical activity and circulating amino acids concentration in peripubertal girls. Three hundred ninety-six Finnish girls participated in the longitudinal study from childhood (mean age 11.2 years) to early adulthood (mean age 18.2 years). Circulating amino acids were assessed by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. LTPA was assessed by self-administered questionnaire. We found that isoleucine, leucine and tyrosine levels were significantly higher in individuals with lower LTPA than their peers at age 11 (p < 0.05 for all), independent of BMI. In addition, isoleucine and leucine levels increased significantly (~15%) fro…

Prognostic Challenges of SCN1A Genetic Mutations: Report on Two Children with Mild Features

2016

Mutations in the gene encoding the α-1 subunit of the voltage-gated sodium channel (SCN1A) are associated with variable but usually severe clinical course, both for the epileptic seizures and the cognitive impairment. The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively review two patients affected by seizures and two different types of SCN1A gene mutations (microdeletion and point mutation). The children (a 4-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy) were affected by generalized tonic–clonic seizures and myoclonic jerks plus unilateral seizures, respectively. Genetic analyses showed, in the girl, the presence of a 4 MB deletion involving SCN1A and four other genes, and a point mutation in the…

Molecular characterisation of k-casein gene in Girgentana dairy goat breed and identification of two new alleles

2015

The k-casein fraction plays an important role in the formation, stabilisation and aggregation on casein micelles and thus affects technological and nutritional properties of milk. In this study, exon 4 of k-casein (CSN3) gene was sequenced and analysed in Girgentana goat breed. Analyses of the obtained sequences showed the presence of A, B, D, and G known alleles and two new genetic variants, named D’ and N. The new D’ allele differs from D in one transition, G284→A284, which did not cause amino acid change. The new N allele differs from A in five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs): T245/C245, G284/A284, G309/A309, G471/A471 and T591/C591, while it differs from C in one transition, i.e.…

CAN I TELL JUST BY MYSELF? DISCUSSING A PARENTAL MENTAL DISORDER WITH A CHILD IN A RESEARCH INTERVIEW

2016

In this single-case study, we focus on how to have a dialogue in a research interview with a child whose parent has been diagnosed with a mental disorder. The interactional context and the interviewer’s role in co-constructing the child’s accounts have been largely neglected in the qualitative psychological research on this subject. Stigma related to mental disorders is increasingly being recognized as a central issue for the entire mental health field. It is considered to have far-reaching effects on the social interaction of the stigmatized person and also to contaminate the interactions of those around that person. We examine how the stigma of a parental mental disorder arises and is neg…

Relationship between age and elite marathon race time in world single age records from 5 to 93 years

2013

International audience; Background:The aims of the study were (i) to investigate the relationship between elite marathon race times andage in 1-year intervals by using the world single age records in marathon running from 5 to 93 years and (ii)toevaluate the sex difference in elite marathon running performance with advancing age. Methods:World single age records in marathon running in 1-year intervals for women and men were analysedregarding changes across age for both men and women using linear and non-linear regression analyses for eachage for women and men. Results:The relationship between elite marathon race time and age was non-linear (i.e.polynomial regression 4thdegree) for women and m…
