Impact of chemotherapy on disseminated low-grade glioma in children and adolescents: Report from the HIT-LGG 1996 trial

2011

Background We describe demographic data of disseminated childhood low-grade glioma (DLGG) prospectively recruited in the HIT-LGG 1996 study and evaluate the impact of primary chemotherapy (CT) on the outcome of these tumors, which have previously only been described in small and retrospective series. Patients and Methods The multicenter study HIT-LGG 1996 accrued 1181 children and adolescents with low-grade glioma. 61 patients (5.2%) had tumor dissemination, with 2.8% being present at diagnosis. Frequencies of dissemination for different subgroups were calculated. Efficiency of first-line CT with vincristine/carboplatin was defined in 24 children with dissemination prior to first-line non-s…

Strategies in Glioma-Surgery

2011

1.1 Epidemiology and classification of gliomas Malignant glioma is one of the most feared diseases in the industrialized nations. About 77% of all malignant tumors within the central nervous system are gliomas. There are about 18.000 newly diagnosed cases annually within the USA (9/100.000 inhabitants per year) and the disease causes about 13.000 deaths each year. Statistically this is a higher loss of life-time than all other tumor-entities together (Schwartzbaum et al., 2006). About 45-50% of these gliomas are histologically classified as gliobalstoma multiforme (GBM) the most aggressive type of glioma which is classified as WHO grade IV (following the classification of Kleihues et al., 2…

When Neuroprotection Becomes a Potential Ally of High-Grade Glioma.

2019

Despite the use of multimodal treatment regimens, high-grade gliomas (HHGs) are tumors invariably associated with a poor prognosis. The median patient survival after diagnosis is approximately 1 year, through surgery/radiation and chemotherapy treatments. To date, traditional approaches fail to treat efficiently HHGs because surgery does not completely remove the tumor without damaging the brain, radiation therapy cannot be used beyond a certain threshold dose, and chemotherapy has shown limited efficacy and toxic effects. Notwithstanding many attempts at improving outcome using novel agents, the treatment of this disease has not improved in more than a decade. Although scientific and techno…

Chaperonology: The Third Eye on Brain Gliomas

2018

The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/National Cancer Institute of Canada Phase III trial has validated as a current regimen for high-grade gliomas (HGG) a maximal safe surgical resection followed by radiotherapy with concurrent temozolamide. However, it is essential to balance maximal tumor resection with preservation of the patient&rsquo

The Role of Medicinal Mushrooms in Brain Cancer Therapies: Review.

2021

Medicinal mushrooms are considered an unlimited source of polysaccharides (mainly β-glucans) and polysaccharide-protein complexes and possess various immunological and anticancer properties. In addition, their use in integrative medicine leads to a clear reduction of side effects in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. The literature reports a number of beneficial effects of using mushrooms as health supplements in patients affected by high-grade glioma. The effects of medicinal mushrooms on side effects in patients with brain cancer and a case study report are also described in this review.

Peritumoral perfusion and proton spectroscopic MR imaging in the differentiation of gliomas and solitary metastases

2015

Purpose: To asses the value of peritumoural perfusion-weighted and proton spectroscopic MR imaging in preoperative grading of gliomas and in differentiating between primary gliomas and solitary metastases. Methods and Materials: Ten low-grade gliomas, eight high-grade gliomas, and ten metastases were prospectively evaluated with MR imaging, dynamic susceptibility contrast-enhanced perfusion imaging, and single-voxel proton MR spectroscopy before surgical resection or stereotactic biopsy. Maximal rCBV values and maximal Cho/Cr ratios were calculated from peritumoural region surrounding the tumour. Tumour grade presumed with these values was compared to histopathologic grading. Differences in…

Miega artērijas audzēju ķirurģiska ārstēšana Latvijā no 2010. līdz 2015.gadam

2016

Congenital Plaque-Type Glomuvenous Malformations Associated with Fetal Pleural Effusion and Ascites

2010

Glomuvenous malformations are hereditary vascular anomalies, usually without extracutaneous involvement. We report two cases of extensive thoracic plaque-type glomuvenous malformation in newborns who had previously been diagnosed in utero with pleural effusion and ascites, suggesting a pathogenic link between the two conditions.

Evidence for developmental precursor lesions in epilepsy-associated glioneuronal tumors

1999

The etiology and pathogenesis of epilepsy-associated local lesions remain largely unknown. Histopathologically, the most frequent lesions comprise gangliogliomas and glioneuronal malformations, i.e., hamartias or hamartomas, with a preferred location in the temporal lobe of young patients. A characteristic histopathological admixture of glial and neuronal elements, the focal appearance and the benign clinical behaviour suggest a malformative nature. So far, no molecular genetic alterations specifically involved in the pathogenesis of these glioneuronal lesions have been identified. However, immunohistochemical analysis revealed distinct distribution patterns of oncofetal antigens. The embry…
