Presión arterial: ¿esfigmomanómetro manual o digital?

2008

Cancer-Related Venous Thrombosis: Residual Vein Thrombosis Improves Screening for Occult Cancer.

2007

Abstract Background. Clinical advantages of extensive screening for occult cancer in patients with idiopathic Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is still debated since this approach improves early detection of cancer but not cancer-related mortality. Recently, we have demonstrated that patients with Residual Vein Thrombosis (RVT), 3 months after DVT, have a high risk for cancer in the subsequent 2 years (Siragusa S et al. Blood2005;106(11):OC262). At the present it is unknown whether RVT assessment may be used to select patients, with idiopathic DVT, who require screening for occult cancer. Objective of the study. We conducted a prospective study evaluating whether a RVT-based screening for cancer …

Using the Hermite Regression Formula to Design a Neural Architecture with Automatic Learning of the “Hidden” Activation Functions

2000

The value of the output function gradient of a neural network, calculated in the training points, plays an essential role for its generalization capability. In this paper a feed forward neural architecture (αNet) that can learn the activation function of its hidden units during the training phase is presented. The automatic learning is obtained through the joint use of the Hermite regression formula and the CGD optimization algorithm with the Powell restart conditions. This technique leads to a smooth output function of αNet in the nearby of the training points, achieving an improvement of the generalization capability and the flexibility of the neural architecture. IL CASO STUDIO DI ALCUNE PGM: IMPLICAZIONI PER LE SPECIE DI LEPIDOTTERI NON BERSAGLIO NELLE AREE PROTETTE SICILIANE

2012

Framing of Corporate Social Responsibility by Agribusiness in the USA and Europe : A study of whether the Corporate Social Responsibility disclosure …

2016

Master thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2016 This thesis examines whether the CSR reports by agricultural biotechnology and agrochemical companies in the USA and Europe align to the stakeholders’ (NGOs and the external constituents) expectations. The focus is on issues of key importance to these firms and the stakeholders, including GMOs, chemicals, and the corporate control over seeds. Framing creates expectations, as framing theory indicates framing is to focus on some of the many facets through which an issue can be seen, and highlight them using salient words and phrases to render them significant. The analysis revealed that 16 companies prepare CSR reports: 8 …

From risk assessment to in-context trajectory evaluation - GMOs and their social implications

2011

Purpose: Over the past twenty years, GMOs have raised enormous expectations, passionate political controversies, and an on-going debate on how should these technologies be assessed. Current risk-assessment procedures generally assess GMOs in terms of their potential risk of negatively affecting human health and the environment. Yet, is this risk-benefit approach appropriate to a deliver a robust assessment of GMOs? In this paper, we question the validity of current risk-assessment from both a social and an ecological perspective, and we elaborate an alternative approach, namely in-context trajectory evaluation Methods: This paper combines frame analysis, context analysis and eco-social anal…

Over-expression of two different forms of the α-secretase ADAM10 affects learning and memory in mice

2006

Members of the ADAM family (adisintegrin and metalloprotease) are the main candidates for physiologically relevant alpha-secretases. The alpha-secretase cleaves in the non-amyloidogenic pathway the amyloid precursor protein within the region of the Abeta peptides preventing their aggregation in the brain. The increase of alpha-secretase activity in the brain provides a plausible strategy to prevent Abeta formation. Concerning this possibility two transgenic mouse lines (FVB/N) have been created: mice over-expressing the bovine form of the alpha-secretase (ADAM10) and mice over-expressing an inactive form of the alpha-secretase (ADAM10-E348A-HA; ADAM10-dn). For behavioral examination a F1 ge…

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis

1977

Spatially localized solutions of the Hammerstein equation with sigmoid type of nonlinearity

2016

Abstract We study the existence of fixed points to a parameterized Hammerstein operator H β , β ∈ ( 0 , ∞ ] , with sigmoid type of nonlinearity. The parameter β ∞ indicates the steepness of the slope of a nonlinear smooth sigmoid function and the limit case β = ∞ corresponds to a discontinuous unit step function. We prove that spatially localized solutions to the fixed point problem for large β exist and can be approximated by the fixed points of H ∞ . These results are of a high importance in biological applications where one often approximates the smooth sigmoid by discontinuous unit step function. Moreover, in order to achieve even better approximation than a solution of the limit proble…
