Population-based cancer registries in Spain and their role in cancer control

Abstract Population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) are a key element for cancer control. They measure cancer incidence and trends, provide indicators for planning and evaluating cancer control activities, and undertake research. The first two PBCRs in Spain were established in Zaragoza in 1960 and Navarre in 1970, but it was from 1980 to 1995 when most of the existing registries went into operation. Today, 26.5% of the Spanish population is served by a cancer registry. Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute, self-limited febrile illness that mainly affecting small- to medium-sized vessels and occurs in early childhood. The etiology is currently unknown, however it likely results from an immunologic response triggered by microbial agents, with documented genetic susceptibility. Intravenous administration of immunoglobulin (IVIG) is the gold standard therapy for coronary arteritis in the acute phase of KD; some patients do not respond to IVIG and coronary aneurysms continue to develop in 5%. The most serious complications are coronary vasculitis and aneurysms. 15% of these patients do not respond to IVIG (Refractory KD:RMK) and have a higher risk of aneurysms.

A possible effect of dopamine on the temporal resolution of goldfish was investigated in a behavioral, two-alternative, forced-choice procedure. Flicker fusion frequency (FFF) was measured before and after bilateral intravitreal injections of D1- or D2-dopamine receptor (D1-/D2-R) antagonists, or after depletion of retinal dopamine by bilateral intravitreal injections of the dopaminergic neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA). Prior to drug injections, fish achieved FFFs of 33–39 Hz. Aims We compared a newly developed irrigated gold tip electrode ablation catheter and a gold tip 4 and 8 mm catheter with the corresponding platinum–iridium (Pt) tip catheters in an in vitro setting. Methods and results In a flow chamber simulating physiological flow conditions, radiofrequency catheter ablation was performed on tissue samples of porcine endomyocardium and liver. Lesion depth, energy and temperature delivery, and popping frequency were determined. Two hundred and fifty-three ablations were conducted.
