Gold Nanoparticles on 3D-Printed Filters : From Waste to Catalysts

2019

Three-dimensionally printed solid but highly porous polyamide-12 (PA12) plate-like filters were used as selective adsorbents for capturing tetrachloroaurate from acidic solutions and leachates to prepare PA12–Au composite catalysts. The polyamide-adsorbed tetrachloroaurate can be readily reduced to gold nanoparticles by using sodium borohydride, ascorbic acid, hydrogen peroxide, UV light, or by heating. All reduction methods led to polyamide-anchored nanoparticles with an even size distribution and high dispersion. The particle sizes were somewhat dependent on the reduction method, but the average diameters were typically about 20 nm. Particle sizes were determined by using a combination of…

Gold recycling at laboratory scale: from nanowaste to nanospheres

2019

The market for products based on nanotechnology, and with it the use of nanomaterials and the generation of nanowaste, increases day by day. Among the vast variety of nanomaterials available, gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are among the most studied and applied in commercial products. This current situation requires both the development of recovery methods to reduce the amount of nanowaste produced, and new synthetic methods that allow the reuse of recovered gold for new nanomaterial production, keeping in mind both economical and ecological considerations. In this work, a methodology to recover gold from aqueous laboratory nanowaste and transform it into an aqueous HAuCl4 solution was develope…

Mammalian cell growth on gold nanoparticle-decorated substrates is influenced by the nanoparticle coating

2014

In this work, we study epithelial cell growth on substrates decorated with gold nanorods that are functionalized either with a positively charged cytotoxic surfactant or with a biocompatible polymer exhibiting one of two different end groups, resulting in a neutral or negative surface charge of the particle. Upon observation of cell growth for three days by live cell imaging using optical dark field microscopy, it was found that all particles supported cell adhesion while no directed cell migration and no significant particle internalization occurred. Concerning cell adhesion and spreading as compared to cell growth on bare substrates after 3 days of incubation, a reduction by 45% and 95%, …

Mechanical properties of MDCK II cells exposed to gold nanorods

2015

Background: The impact of gold nanoparticles on cell viability has been extensively studied in the past. Size, shape and surface functionalization including opsonization of gold particles ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of nanometers are among the most crucial parameters that have been focussed on. Cytoxicity of nanomaterial has been assessed by common cytotoxicity assays targeting enzymatic activity such as LDH, MTT and ECIS. So far, however, less attention has been paid to the mechanical parameters of cells exposed to gold particles, which is an important reporter on the cellular response to external stimuli. Results: Mechanical properties of confluent MDCK II cells exposed to go…

Influence of saline and pH on collagen type I fibrillogenesis in vitro: Fibril polymorphism and colloidal gold labelling

2007

We have produced different collagen type I fibrils by in vitro fibrillogenesis of acetic acid-soluble collagen within the pH range 2.5-9.0, in the presence and absence of 150 mM NaCl. The varying relatively stable molecular assemblies and polymorphic fibrillar end-products produced after 24 h incubation have been assessed and compared by the TEM study of specimens negatively stained with uranyl acetate. In the presence of 150 mM NaCl, the assembly of collagen at low pH (2.5) leads to the formation of initial molecular aggregates that progressively link together at slightly higher pH (5.0) to form sub-fibrils and spindle-shaped D-banded bundles of sub-fibrils. At pH 6.0 these D-banded bundle…

Controllable coverage of chemically modified graphene sheets with gold nanoparticles by thermal treatment of graphite oxide with N,N-dimethylformamide

2013

Abstract We describe a simple chemical method to reduce and functionalize graphite oxide by reaction with dimethylformamide under controlled heating. Our experiments suggest that the reaction conditions assist the decomposition of the solvent to produce dimethylamine molecules that can react with the oxygen-rich functional groups covering the surface of the exfoliated layers of graphene, therefore generating chemically modified graphene (CMG). These N-functionalities have been next used as anchoring points for the grafting of Au nanoparticles. Given that the functionalization extent can be controlled with the temperature and reaction time, our approach can be considered as a straightforward…

Whispering gallery mode resonator and glucose oxidase based glucose biosensor

2020

Abstract In this research whispering gallery mode resonators (WGMRs) were applied in new concept of glucose sensor based on the shift of WGM resonance frequency induced by enzymatic oxidation of glucose by glucose oxidase (GOx), which was immobilized on WGM-resonator surface. During the enzymatic reaction catalyzed by GOx electrons from glucose via GOx are transferred towards co-immobilized gold nanoparticles (Au-NPs). WGM-resonators were fabricated from standard telecommunication optical-fiber melted in a hydrogen flame. Whispering gallery mode resonance based optical signals generated by these WGM-resonators were evaluated. These WGM-resonators, which were characterized by sufficient qual…

Reagent free electrochemical-based detection of silver ions at interdigitated microelectrodes using in-situ pH control

2021

Abstract Herein we report on the development of an electrochemical sensor for silver ions detection in tap water using anodic sweep voltammetry with in-situ pH control; enabled by closely spaced interdigitated electrode arrays. The in-situ pH control approach allowed the pH of a test solution to be tailored to pH 3 (experimentally determined as the optimal pH) by applying 1.65 V to a protonator electrode with the subsequent production of protons, arising from water electrolysis, dropping the local pH value. Using this approach, an initial proof-of-concept study for silver detection in sodium acetate was undertaken where 1.25 V was applied during deposition (to compensate for oxygen producti…

The role of halide ions in the anisotropic growth of gold nanoparticles: a microscopic, atomistic perspective

2016

We provide a microscopic view of the role of halides in controlling the anisotropic growth of gold nanorods through a combined computational and experimental study. Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations unveil that Br− adsorption is not only responsible for surface passivation, but also acts as the driving force for CTAB micelle adsorption and stabilization on the gold surface in a facet-dependent way. The partial replacement of Br− by Cl− decreases the difference between facets and the surfactant density. Finally, in the CTAC solution, no halides or micellar structures protect the gold surface and further gold reduction should be uniformly possible. Experimentally observed nanoparticle'…

Nanophase Segregation of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Gold Nanoparticles

2017

International audience; Nanophase segregation of a bi-component thiol self-assembled monolayer is predicted using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations and experimentally confirmed. The simulations suggest the formation of domains rich in acid-terminated chains, on one hand, and of domains rich in amide-functionalized ethylene glycol oligomers, on the other hand. In particular, within the amide-ethylene glycol oligomers region, a key role is played by the formation of inter-chain hydrogen bonds. The predicted phase segregation is experimentally confirmed by the synthesis of 35 and 15 nm gold nanoparticles functionalized with several binary mixtures of ligands. An extensive study by trans…
