A hybrid multi-criteria approach to GPR image mining applied to water supply system maintenance

[EN] Data processing techniques for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) image mining provide essential information to optimize maintenance management of Water Supply Systems (WSSs). These techniques aim to elaborate on radargrams in order to produce meaningful graphical representations of critical buried components of WSSs. Electromagnetic and ultrasonic investigations on a Roman marble slab

The archaeological museum of Rome asked our group about the physical consistency of a marble slab (second to third century AD) that recently fell during its travel as part of an exhibition. We decided to use different methodologies to investigate the slab: namely a pacometer (Protovale Elcometer) to individuate the internal coupling pins, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) (2000 MHz) and ultrasonic (55 kHz) tomographic high-density surveys to investigate the internal extension of all the visible fractures and to search for the hidden ones. Microfluidic Synthesis of Highly Shape-Anisotropic Particles from Liquid Crystalline Elastomers with Defined Director Field Configurations

In this article, we present the synthesis of highly shape-anisotropic, micrometer-sized particles from liquid crystalline elastomers, which have the ability to reversibly change their shape in response to a certain external stimulus. For their preparation, we utilized a microfluidic setup. We succeeded in preparing sets of particles with differing degrees of shape anisotropy in their ground state including highly anisotropic fiber-like objects. All samples produced movement during the phase transition from the nematic to the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal.
