Oral CorticoSteroid sparing with biologics in severe asthma: A remark of the Severe Asthma Network in Italy (SANI)

2020

According to the data derived from several national and international registries, including SANI (Severe Asthma Network Italy), and considering the strong impact that frequent or regular use of oral corticosteroid has on quality of life (QoL) of severe asthmatics, as well as on the costs for managing corticosteroid-related diseases, oral corticosteroid sparing up to withdrawal should be considered a primary outcome in the management of severe asthma. New biologics have clearly demonstrated that this effect is possible, with concomitant reduction in the rate of exacerbations and in symptom control. Then, there is no reason for using so frequently oral corticosteroid before having explored al…

The nearly Gorenstein property for numerical duplications and semitrivial extensions

2022

In this thesis we present and study the ideal duplication, a new construction within the class of the relative ideals of a numerical semigroup $S$, that, under specific assumptions, produces a relative ideal of the numerical duplication $SJoin^b E$, for some ideal $E$ of $S$. We prove that every relative ideal of the numerical duplication can be uniquely written as the ideal duplication of two relative ideals of $S$; this allows us to better understand how the basic operations of the class of the relative ideals of $SJoin^b E$ work. In particular, we characterize the ideals $E$ such that $SJoin^b E$ is nearly Gorenstein. With the aim to generalize this construction to commutative rings with…

Risk of adverse pathology at prostatectomy in the era of MRI and targeted biopsies; rethinking active surveillance for intermediate risk prostate can…

2021

Abstract Purpose Men with intermediate risk (IR) prostate cancer (CaP) are often excluded from active surveillance (AS) due to higher rates of adverse pathology (AP). We determined our rate of AP in men who underwent multiparametric MRI (MpMRI) with combined biopsy (CB) consisting of targeted biopsy (TB) and systematic biopsy (SB) prior to radical prostatectomy (RP). Methods A retrospective review was conducted of men with Gleason Grade Group (GG) 2 disease who underwent RP after SB alone or after preoperative MRI with CB. AP was defined as either pathologic stage T3a (AP ≥ T3a) or pathologic stage T3b (AP ≥ T3b) and/or GG upgrading. Rates of AP were determined for both groups and those who…

Immunfluorescence study of neuropeptides in identified neurons of the rat auditory superior olivary complex.

1999

The present study was conducted to investigate the distribution and immunohistochemical characteristics of ascending and descending projection neurons of the rat superior olivary complex (SOC), a group of interrelated brainstem nuclei. Ascending neurons were identified by injection of cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) into the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus (IC), descending neurons were labeled by application of Fluoro-Gold (FG) into the scala tympani of the cochlea, ipsilaterally to the IC injection. In accordance with the literature, we observed neurons innervating the IC located in the lateral superior olivary nucleus (LSO) and dorsal periolivary groups (DPO) on both sides, in th…

On the duration of sovereign ratings cycle phases

2021

Abstract Using long-term sovereign ratings data for a panel of 130 countries over the last three decades, we investigate the duration and determinants of sovereign rating phases through the lens of discrete-time Weibull models. We find that the likelihood of the end of the ‘speculative-grade’ phase increases as time goes by (i.e. there is positive duration dependence), but the ‘investment-grade’ phase is not duration dependent. Thus, for sovereigns rated as speculative, the build-up of reputation as good borrowers is a gradual process, whereas the reputation of investment-grade sovereigns solidifies and remains unchanged as time passes. However, the length of both phases significantly depen…

Classifying Algebras with Graded Involutions or Superinvolutions with Multiplicities of their Cocharacter Bounded by One

2020

Let A be superalgebra over a field of characteristic zero and let ∗ be either a graded involution or a superinvolution defined on A. In this paper we characterize the ∗-algebras whose ∗-cocharacter has multiplicities bounded by one, showing a set of ∗-polynomial identities satisfied by such algebras.

The importance of the concept and histological criteria of "intraepithelial squamous cell carcinoma" of the esophagus: in comparison between Western …

2017

Background There are differences in the histological diagnostic criteria for early stage gastrointestinal carcinoma between Western and Japanese pathologists. Western histological criteria of carcinoma are “presence of stromal invasion of neoplastic cells”, while Japanese criteria are “the degree of cytological and structural abnormality of neoplastic cells, regardless of stromal invasion”. The aim of the present study is to clarify and review the present status of the Western and Japanese histological criteria of early stage esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and also to clarify their significance and accuracy. Methods Twenty-nine Polish, German, and Japanese pathologists participate…

An FPGA based Topological Processor Prototype for the ATLAS Level-1 Trigger Upgrade

2012

By 2014 the LHC will collide proton bunches at 14TeV with an increased instantaneous luminosity up to 3·10³⁴cm⁻²s⁻¹. The resulting higher event rate will challenge the existing ATLAS trigger system. A reduction on the trigger rate can be achieved by selecting interesting channels based on their expected decay topology and thus reducing background. This will be achieved by introducing of a new FPGA based module in the Level-1 trigger: the Topological Processor L1Topo. With L1Topo it will be possible for the first time to concentrate detailed information from the entire calorimeters and the muon detector into a single module. L1Topo will receive a total aggregate bandwidth of 1Tb/s. The data …

Upgrade of ALICE forward detectors

2019

ALICE will upgrade its subsystems in 2019−2020 to fully benefit from the increased collision rate and luminosity of the LHC at CERN. Two new forward detectors will be installed at the core of ALICE: the Fast Interaction Trigger (FIT) and the Muon Forward Tracker (MFT). Additionally, during the shutdown between Run 3 and Run 4, there will be an opportunity to install the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal). This paper describes these new forward detectors, their physics justification and goals, selected design features along with performance of detector prototypes and simulated performance figures. peerReviewed
