The grammaticalization of passives

Abstract This article examines the grammaticalisation of the linguistic category of passives. It explains that the notion ‘passive’ comprises morphologically marked devices by which the highest-ranking or single argument of a predicate is syntactically demoted, while a lower-ranking argument can be promoted to a syntactically privileged position. It describes the diachronic relation between the foregrounding and backgrounding passives.

Grammaticalization in Turkic languages

Abstract This article presents an overview of grammaticalisation in Turkic languages. It provides examples of typical grammaticalisation processes observed in Turkic languages and explains that the present-day members of this language family can be divided into six branches. It discusses different sources of grammaticalisation in Turkic languages including unknown sources, nonverbal sources, and verbal sources.

Abstract The Taṯqīf al-lisān wa talqīḥ al-ǧanān by the grammarian and linguist, Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar Ibn Ḫalaf Ibn Makkī al-Ḥamīrī al-Māzirī al-Ṣiqillī, is an example of the Arabic language spoken in 10th-century Sicily, when the island was an Islamic Emirate. In its 50 chapters, the treaty lists grammatical errors made by Sicilians whether common people (al-ʿāmma) or cultivated speakers (al-muḫaṣṣiṣūn). The typology of this treatise falls within those classified as laḥn al-ʿāmma, a field of linguistic science that is dedicated to correcting forms that deviate from the grammar rules of the standard language accepted by grammarians and lexicographers. Rigotrio At Semeval-2017 Task 9: Combining Machine Learning And Grammar Engineering For Amr Parsing And Generation

By addressing both text-to-AMR parsing and AMR-to-text generation, SemEval-2017 Task 9 established AMR as a powerful semantic interlingua. We strengthen the interlingual aspect of AMR by applying the multilingual Grammatical Framework (GF) for AMR-to-text generation. Our current rule-based GF approach completely covered only 12.3% of the test AMRs, therefore we combined it with state-of-the-art JAMR Generator to see if the combination increases or decreases the overall performance. The combined system achieved the automatic BLEU score of 18.82 and the human Trueskill score of 107.2, to be compared to the plain JAMR Generator results. Il contributo presenta i risultati di un’analisi sull'espressione dell’agente nelle costruzioni passive per mezzo di un sintagma preposizionale (cfr. il cane è stato mangiato dal gatto) negli antichi volgari italoromanzi centrali e meridionali. In particolare, si affrontano due questioni finora inesplorate: a) la semantica delle preposizioni che marcano il partecipante defocalizzato, tipicamente un agente (da, per); b) la distribuzione funzionale che sembra semanticamente determinata.
