Lithium adsorption at prismatic graphite surfaces enhances interlayer cohesion

2013

Abstract We use density functional calculations to determine the binding sites and binding energies of Li + at graphene edges and prismatic graphite surfaces. Binding is favorable at bare and carbonyl terminated surfaces, but not favorable at hydrogen terminated surfaces. These findings have implications for the exfoliation of graphitic anodes in lithium-ion batteries that happens if solute and solvent co-intercalate. First, specific adsorption facilitates desolvation of Li + . Second, chemisorption lowers the surface energy by about 1 J m −2 prismatic surface area, and gives graphite additional stability against exfoliation. The results offer an explanation for experiments that consistentl…

Antioxidative and Photo-Induced Effects of Different Types of N-Doped Graphene Quantum Dots.

2022

Due to the increasing number of bacterial infections and the development of resistivity toward antibiotics, new materials and approaches for treatments must be urgently developed. The production of new materials should be ecologically friendly considering overall pollution with chemicals and economically acceptable and accessible to the wide population. Thus, the possibility of using biocompatible graphene quantum dots (GQDs) as an agent in photodynamic therapy was studied. First, dots were obtained using electrochemical cutting of graphite. In only one synthetic step using gamma irradiation, GQDs were doped with N atoms without any reagent. Obtained dots showed blue photoluminescence, with…

Carbon Dots Dispersed on Graphene/SiO2/Si: A Morphological Study

2019

Low-dimensional carbon materials occupy a relevant role in the field of nanotechnology. Herein, the authors report a study conducted by atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy on the deposition of carbon dots onto graphene surfaces. The study aims at understanding if and how the morphology and the microstructure of chemical vapor deposited graphene on Si/SiO2 may change due to the interaction with the carbon dots. Potential alteration in the graphene's electrical properties might be detrimental for optoelectronic applications. The deposition of carbon dots dispersed in water and ethanol solvents are explored to investigate the effect of solvents with different fluidic properties. The…

Hydrothermally resistant thermally reduced graphene oxide and multi-wall carbon nanotube based epoxy nanocomposites

2013

This study is focused on the investigation of thermo-mechanical properties of an epoxy resin filled with thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRGO) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) after exposure of samples to hot distilled water. Addition of low contents of TRGO and MWCNTs greatly reduces the water sorption capacity of the epoxy polymer and improves its resistance to hydrothermal ageing. The glassy and rubbery moduli of the neat epoxy decreased for about 20% and 80%, respectively, while TRGO-based epoxy filled with 0.3 wt.% of TRGO showed only 6% reduction of both moduli. Hydrothermal ageing resulted in an enormous drop in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the neat epoxy, by abo…

Synthesis and optimization of microwave-assisted exfoliated functionalized graphene as an efficient catalyst in biodiesel production

2018

In this study, the capability of functionalized graphene was investigated as heterogeneous catalyst in biodiesel production from vegetable oil. Graphene oxide was fabricated from graphite via carrier improved method, and its exfoliation was carried out by microwave radiation. The exfoliated sample was reduced and sulfonated, being analyzed by Fourier transform Infrared, Scanning Microscopy Transmission Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and element mapping. The catalyst was employed in biodiesel production reaction and effective reaction parameters were studied. The optimized reaction temperature, time and catalyst percentage were 178 °C, 3 h and 1.9% respectively. It was observed that …

Preparation and mechanical characterization of polycaprolactone/graphene oxide biocomposite nanofibers

2016

Biocomposite nanofiber scaffolds of polycaprolactone (PCL) filled with graphene oxide (GO) were prepared using electrospinning technology. Morphological and mechanical properties of the scaffolds were characterized in dry and wet environment. The results showed that the successful incorporation of GO nanosheets into PCL polymer nanofibers improved their mechanical properties. Furthermore it was demonstrated the higher performance achieved when GO is filled at low concentration in the nanofibers.

Graphene related magnetic materials: micromechanical exfoliation of 2D layered magnets based on bimetallic anilate complexes with inserted [FeIII(aca…

2015

The syntheses, structures and magnetic properties of the coordination compounds of formula [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Cl2 An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (1), [FeIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (2) and [GaIII(acac2-trien)][MnIICrIII(Br2An)3]·(CH3CN)2 (3) are reported. They exhibit a 2D anionic network formed by Mn(II) and Cr(III) ions linked through anilate ligands, while the [FeIII(acac2-trien)]+ or [GaIII(acac2-trien)]+ charge-compensating cations are placed inside the hexagonal channels of the 2D network, instead of being inserted in the interlamellar spacing. Thus, these crystals are formed by hybrid layers assembled through van der Waals interactions. The magnetic properties indicate …

Enzyme-modified electrodes for biosensors and biofuel cells

2019

In biosensors and biofuel cells, it is often desirable to accelerate the electron transfer rate between the enzyme and electrode surface to improve the performance of the devices (sensitivity or power output). To this end, in this review, we focus on three important strategies available to improve the performance of enzyme-modified electrodes: the use of protein engineering, designer polymers, and the introduction of nanomaterials. Engineering the protein or proteins that constitute the biocatalytic elements allow tuning their stability, activity, and specificity. It can also allow changing the enzyme immobilization efficiency (adsorption vs. covalent immobilization, for example). If direct…
