Local Viscosity in the Vicinity of a Wall Coated by Polymer Brush from Green-Kubo Relations

2008

When fluids are confined in slit pores between parallel walls, their static structures and their dynamical properties exhibit inhomogeneity in the z-direction perpendicular to the wall. Of particular interest are local bulk viscosity η b (z) and shear viscosity η s (z). Here, we discuss an algorithm to estimate these quantities from Green-Kubo relations using equilibrium molecular dynamics. As an application example, a polymer brush (macromolecules end-grafted to a substrate at z= 0) interacting with a solvent formed from point-like particles is given.

GHZ state generation of three Josephson qubits in the presence of bosonic baths

2013

We analyze an entangling protocol to generate tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states in a system consisting of three superconducting qubits with pairwise coupling. The dynamics of the open quantum system is investigated by taking into account the interaction of each qubit with an independent bosonic bath with an ohmic spectral structure. To this end a microscopic master equation is constructed and exactly solved. We find that the protocol here discussed is stable against decoherence and dissipation due to the presence of the external baths.

Use of selected autochthonous lactic acid bacteria for Spanish-style table olive fermentation

2012

The present work presents a successful attempt to achieve an enhanced and more predictable fermentation process in Spanish-style green olive technology by selection and use of autochthonous starter cultures. During the first phase of this work, two Spanish-like fermentations of green table olives of cultivar (cv) “Nocellara del Belice”, coming from irrigated and not irrigated fields, were monitored, in order to highlight the best agricultural conditions for drupe production and to isolate lactic acid bacteria strains with relevant technological properties. Among 88 identified isolates, one Lactobacillus pentosus strain showed remarkable biochemical features and high acidification rate in sy…

Dyadic Green's function for the electrically biased graphene-based multilayered spherical structures

2020

Abstract Dyadic Green's function for a multilayered spherical structure with alternating graphene-dielectric shells is extracted in this paper. To this end, the unknown expansion coefficients of the scattering superposition method are obtained by considering graphene local surface currents at the interface of two adjacent layers. To validate the formulas, the procedure of Mie scattering analysis employing our formulas is clarified and the extinction efficiencies of various graphene-based nanoparticles are computed. The possibility of using the proposed structure in the design of multi-band optical absorbers is discussed in detail. Moreover, a closed-form formula for obtaining the Purcell fa…

Pb–Pb age, stable isotope and chemical composition of Archaean magnesite, Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa

2010

International audience; Trace-element, carbon, oxygen and lead-isotope analyses were carried out to determine the formation mode and crystallization age of magnesite from the Budd ultramafic complex of the Archaean Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa. Its significantly high Ti contents probably relate to a soluble Ti-rich accessory mineral, probably dissolved during magnesite precipitation. Primitive mantle-normalized REE patterns of the magnesite show negative Ce and Eu anomalies induced by two events: (1) the Eu anomaly indicates reducing conditions probably induced by the emplacement of the ultramafic source rock; (2) the Ce anomaly implies oxidizing conditions, probably during a hyd…

The green roofs for reduction in the load on rainwater drainage in highly urbanised areas

2021

AbstractRapid weather phenomena, particularly sudden and intense rainfall, have become a problem in urban areas in recent years. During heavy rainfall, urban rainwater drainage systems are unable to discharge huge amounts of runoff into collecting reservoirs, which usually results in local flooding. This paper presents attempts to forecast a reduction in the load on the rainwater drainage system through the implementation of green roofs in a case study covering two selected districts of Opole (Poland)—the Old Town and the City Centre. Model tests of extensive and intensive roofs were carried out, in order to determine the reduction of rainwater runoff from the roof surface for the site unde…

SOLAR DESALINATION: A CHALLENGE FOR SUSTAINABLE FRESH WATER IN THE 21ST CENTURY

2007

generate a sustainable source of fresh water as well as energy. This combination is highly valued as it limits and reduces air pollutant emissions and green house gases generated by combustion of fossil fuels. Increase in energy demand during the first half of this century is expected to continue, which makes the cost of renewable solar energy highly competitive against fossil fuels. Desalination has been relied on to provide fresh water for large cities and countries across the world. The desalination industry continues to grow in countries in arid regions. Various aspects of solar desalination processes, solar energy, and conventional desalination are discussed. Scenarios for combination …

La formula razionale rivisitata

2019

The Rational Formula (RF), also known as CIA formula, is probably the most applied equation in practical hydrology to compute the peak discharge, due to its simplicity and effective compromise between theory and data availability. The RF assumes the linearity of the hillslope response, neglects the time to ponding and the antecedent soil moisture condition (ASMC), concentrates the infiltration effect in the runoff coefficient (C) which estimation is highly controversial, since it is based on qualitative indications. This paper proposes an advanced rational formula that makes it possible to derive the peak discharge at the hillslope scale, where the above assumptions are relaxed and which de…

Metal- and Reagent-Free Electrochemical Synthesis of Alkyl Arylsulfonates in a Multi-Component Reaction.

2020

Abstract This work presents the first electrochemical preparation of alkyl arylsulfonates by direct anodic oxidation of electron‐rich arenes. The reaction mechanism features a multi‐component reaction consisting of electron‐rich arenes, an alcohol of choice and excess SO2 in an acetonitrile‐HFIP reaction mixture. In‐situ formed monoalkyl sulfites are considered as key intermediates with bifunctional purpose. Firstly, this species functions as nucleophile and secondly, excellent conductivity is provided. Several primary and secondary alcohols and electron‐rich arenes are implemented in this reaction to form the alkyl arylsulfonates in yields up to 73 % with exquisite selectivity. Boron‐doped…

6-mercaptopurine and 9-(2-phosphonyl-methoxyethyl) adenine (PMEA) transport altered by two missense mutations in the drug transporter gene ABCC4

2008

Multiple drug resistance protein 4 (MRP4, ABCC4) belongs to the C subfamily of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily and participates in the transport of diverse antiviral and chemotherapeutic agents such as 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and 9-(2-phosphonyl methoxyethyl) adenine (PMEA). We have undertaken a comprehensive functional characterization of protein variants of MRP4 found in Caucasians and other ethnicities. A total of 11 MRP4 missense genetic variants (nonsynonymous SNPs), fused to green fluorescent protein (GFP), were examined in Xenopus laevis oocytes for their effect on expression, localization, and function of the transporter. Radiolabeled 6-MP and PMEA were chosen…
