Advancements in Sustainable PVDF Copolymer Membrane Preparation Using Rhodiasolv® PolarClean As an Alternative Eco-Friendly Solvent

2021

In this work, Rhodiasolv® PolarClean was employed as a more sustainable solvent for the preparation of poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) flat sheet membranes via phase inversion technique by coupling vapour induced phase separation (VIPS) and non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) processes. Preliminary calculations based on Hansen solubility parameters well predicted the solubilization of the polymer in the selected solvent. The effect of exposure time on humidity and the influence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and sulfonated polyether sulfone (S-PES) on membrane properties and performance, were evaluated. Three different coagulation …

Novel Au NPs/Preyssler acid/TiO 2 nanocomposite for the photocatalytic removal of azo dye

2014

Abstract In this study, we introduced a novel nanocomposite consisting of Au nanoparticles decorated TiO 2 and Preyssler acid as a multifunctional photocatalyst linker molecule, in which gold ions reduced locally on the TiO 2 surface. The obtained nanocomposite has been characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Electron Dispersive X-ray (EDX) Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Also, their photocatalytic activity has been studied for the degradation of model organic azo dye Malachite Green under UV light irradiation.

Expanding Two-Photon Intravital Microscopy to the Infrared by Means of Optical Parametric Oscillator

2010

Chronic inflammation in various organs, such as the brain, implies that different subpopulations of immune cells interact with the cells of the target organ. To monitor this cellular communication both morphologically and functionally, the ability to visualize more than two colors in deep tissue is indispensable. Here, we demonstrate the pronounced power of optical parametric oscillator (OPO)-based two-photon laser scanning microscopy for dynamic intravital imaging in hardly accessible organs of the central nervous and of the immune system, with particular relevance for long-term investigations of pathological mechanisms (e.g., chronic neuroinflammation) necessitating the use of fluorescent…

Structure-property relationship of PLA-Opuntia Ficus Indica biocomposites

2019

Abstract In this work, a lignocellulosic flour was achieved by grinding the cladodes of Opuntia Ficus Indica and then added to a poly-lactic acid (PLA) in order to prepare biocomposites by melt processing. The influence of filler content and size on the morphological, rheological, and mechanical properties of the green composites was assessed. Moreover, solvent-aided filler extraction enabled to evaluate the homogeneity of filler dispersion, as well as the effect of processing on the geometrical features of the fillers. The experimental data obtained by tensile tests proved to be remarkably higher than those predicted by Halpin–Tsai model, presumably due to the capability of the polymer to …

Highly phosphorescent perfect green emitting iridium(iii) complex for application in OLEDs.

2007

A novel iridium complex, [bis-(2-phenylpyridine)(2-carboxy-4-dimethylaminopyridine)iridium(III)] (N984), was synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic and electrochemical methods; a solution processable OLED device incorporating the N984 complex displays electroluminescence spectra with a narrow bandwidth of 70 nm at half of its intensity, with colour coordinates of x = 0.322; y = 0.529 that are very close to those suggested by the PAL standard for a green emitter. Inhibition of Cor-Ten steel corrosion by “green” extracts of Brassica campestris

2018

Abstract Extract of Brassica campestris was tested as potential corrosion inhibitor for Cor-Ten steel in NaCl and acidic solutions, simulating a marine and an urban-industrial environment, respectively. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were performed both in absence and in presence of the extract at room temperature. The surface chemical analysis was investigated by X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (XPS), before and after corrosion. Electrochemical results demonstrated that a very small concentration of Brassica campestris extracts can inhibit Cor-Ten corrosion in NaCl solution (inhibition efficiency of 80–84%) better than in acidic solutions. Su…

Solution-processable green phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes bearing 3,3,3-triphenylpropionic acid fragment for use in OLEDs

2018

New solution-processable materials based on well-known green iridium(III) heteroleptic complexes (ppy) 2 Ir(acac) and (ppy) 2 Ir(pic) were acquired by chemical modification of ppy ligand with functionable hydroxyl groups and subsequent esterification with 3,3,3-triphenylpropionic acid fragment. Photoluminescence quantum efficiencies up to 0.90 were measured for the compounds in solution. Emission characteristics in pure solid films and different guest-host systems with hole transporting materials were investigated. Green light emitting OLEDs (organic light emitting devices) was prepared and characterized.

Influence of sodium bicarbonate treatment on the aging resistance of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites under marine environment

2019

Abstract Aim of the current study is to investigate how an innovative and eco-friendly chemical treatment based on sodium bicarbonate solution (10 wt%) can improve the aging resistance in marine environment of epoxy based composites, reinforced with flax and jute fibers. To this scope, treated and untreated fiber reinforced composites were manufactured through vacuum infusion technique. The resulting composites were then exposed to salt-fog spray conditions up to 60 days, according to ASTM B117 standard. The assessment of their durability was made by means of tensile, flexural quasi-static tests and Charpy impact tests. Furthermore, the water uptake evolution of each composite was monitored…

Reprocessing and restabilization of greenhouse films

2002

From the ecological and economical points of view, reprocessing of polyethylene greenhouse films is a promising solution to reduce discarded materials and to produce useful, or potentially useful, objects for service. Films exposed outdoors, however, show inferior mechanical properties and the melt processing worsens these properties. The addition of stabilizers and antioxidants to recycled plastic products prevents inherent thermal instabilities from occurring within the time frame of proper processing. In this study, we attempt to explore ways for improving product performance by the addition of four different additives when the recycled films undergo intensive shear processing. The proce…

Valorisation of urban green areas for producing renewable energy and biochar as growing substrate of Sicilian aromatic and nutraceutical species in a…

2020

This work is aimed at evaluating the possible building up of a gasifier for the energy valorisation of residual biomass deriving from urban areas and their surroundings. The area and the volumes of supply and economic convenience have been determined by implementing a GIS-based geographic method to the localisation and quantification of non-uniform elements of plant biomass. The pyrolysis and gasification processes of the lignocellulosic biomass obtained from pruning and maintenance operations of the urban and ornamental green include the production of a residual amount of biochar. The biochar can be used in agriculture as a soil improver and a substrate alternative to peat in the sustainab…
