The role of ENSO flavours and TNA on recent droughts over Amazon forests and the Northeast Brazil region

Amazon tropical forests and the semiarid Northeast Brazil (NEB) region have registered very severe droughts during the last two decades, with a frequency that may have exceeded natural climate variability. Severe droughts impact the physiological response of Amazon forests, decreasing the availability to absorb atmospheric CO2, as well as biodiversity and increasing risk of fires. Droughts on this region also affect population by isolating them due to anomalous low river levels. Impacts of droughts over NEB region are related to water and energy security and subsistence agriculture. This paper represents results of GPR surveying of the ice caps on Galindez (–64.24716W; –65.24992S), Winter (–64.25954W; –65.24944S) and Skua (–64.26530W; –65.25309S) islands (Wilhelm Archipelago, Antarctica) for the period April 2017 — January 2019. The main objectives were identification of the ice layering, monitoring of interglacial heterogeneities (crevasses, interglacial channels and voids) and measurements of the ice thickness. Methods: Surveying on the glaciers has been done with ground coupled shielded bowtie antenna VIY3-300 (300 MHz) GPR and with air coupled dipole Zond 12-e (75 MHz) antenna system. Invasive Observation by Atomic Force Microscope of a Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayer of Gramicidin

The properties of gramicidin, a linear antibiotic polypeptide of 15 amino acids, have been studied at the air-water interface. Analysis of the pressure-area isotherm is not able to conclude about the conformational behavior of gramicidin in the monolayer. Langmuir-Blodgett deposition of gramicidin layers onto a mica substrate has been developed for atomic force microscopy (AFM) observations. At high pressure of deposition, the gramicidin monolayer is composed of dimers perpendicular to the surface. The possibility of removing the half upper part of this dimer monolayer with the AFM tip is more in favor of a structure of single-stranded helical dimers.

Iron deposition on TiO2(110): effect of the surface stoichiometry and roughness

Abstract Characterizations of ultra-thin iron films deposited on TiO 2 (110) surfaces with different stoichiometries, roughnesses and crystallinities have been carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). For a high initial roughness of the substrate, a 2D growth mode is observed up to three monolayers. But, if the initial roughness is low, clusters grow on the TiO 2 surface. Whatever the initial surface stoichiometry, electronic exchanges occur between titanium and iron leading to a reduction of titanium and an oxidation of iron.
