Zinc Binding Sites Conserved in Short Neuropeptides Containing a Diphenylalanine Motif

A diphenylalanine motif in peptides plays a crucial role in supramolecular systems. The current work represents a novel strategy in which a diphenylalanine motif in the central domain of neuropeptides conserves the specific Zn2+ binding site and prevents "hopping" of the Zn2+ ion between alternative metal binding sites. Alternative metal binding sites may also include carboxylic atoms in the terminal domains of a peptide. Therefore, one needs to design a peptide in which the metal will not bind the carboxylic groups in the terminal domains. Herein, we propose that engineering and designing peptides with a diphenylalanine motif in the central domain may yield excellent metal chelators.

Nowadays, instrumental methodologies and rapid bioanalytical techniques complement each other for the analysis of toxic chemical compounds. Fluxapyroxad was commercialized a few years ago as a fungicide and today it is being used worldwide to control a variety of pests. In the present study, the development of monoclonal antibody-based immunochemical methods for the analysis of this chemical in food samples was evaluated for the first time. Leachate formation and characteristics from gasification and grate incineration bottom ash under landfill conditions

Characteristics and formation of leachates from waste gasification and grate firing bottom ash were studied using continuous field measurements from 112 m(3) lysimeters embedded into landfill body for three years. In addition, the total element concentrations of the fresh ash were analysed and laboratory batch tests were performed to study leachate composition. The three-year continuous flow measurement showed that about one fifth of the leachates were formed, when the flow rate was200 l/d, covering3.5% of the study time. Cassava starch processing at small scale in North Vietnam

International audience; In Northern Vietnam, small-scale cassava starch processing is conducted in densely populated craft villages, where processors face difficulties to expand their activities. Three different processing systems were studied among a cluster of three communes in the Red River Delta, producing up to 430 t of starch (at 55% dry matter) per day. The chemical profile of the Thymus vulgaris (Lamiaceae) essential oil (EO) was investigated in order to evaluate its biological properties against microorganisms affecting two Tholu Bommalu, typical Indian leather puppets stored at the International Puppets Museum “Antonio Pasqualino” of Palermo, Italy. A GC–MS analysis, using both polar and apolar columns, was used to determine the chemical composition of the essential oil. Novel antimicrobial ultrathin structures of zein/chitosan blends obtained by electrospinning

Abstract This paper describes the formulation, morphology and biocide properties of novel antimicrobial electrospun zein based ultrathin fiber structures. From the results, it was found that the electrospun fibers of zein can turn the material into a new strong antimicrobial ultrathin-structured system due to retention of remnant amounts of trifluoroacetic acid as determined by ATR–FTIR spectroscopy. A new amphiphilic copolymer have been synthesized starting from the hydrosoluble polyaspartylhydrazide (PAHy) polymer, by grafting both hydrophilic PEG(2000) chains and hydrophobic palmitic acid (C(16)) moieties on polymer backbone, and the structure of obtained PAHy-PEG(2000)-C(16) copolymer have been characterized by 2D (1)H/(13)C NMR experiments. Organ-on-chip (OOC) devices are miniaturized devices replacing animal models in drug discovery and toxicology studies. The majority of OOC devices are made from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), an elastomer widely used in microfluidic prototyping, but posing a number of challenges to experimentalists, including leaching of uncured oligomers and uncontrolled absorption of small compounds. Here we assess the suitability of polylactic acid (PLA) as a replacement material to PDMS for microfluidic cell culture and OOC applications.
