Some effects of the herbicide EL-107 on cellular growth and metabolism

Summary Effects of the herbicide EL-107 (N-[3-(1-ethyl-1-methylpropyl)-5-isoxazolyl]-2,6-dimethoxy-benzamide) on the growth of dicotyledonous plants are described. The herbicide did not inhibit germination but reduced the growth of rape (Brassica napus L.) by half at 0.0057 mg l−1. The most characteristic symptom induced was a swelling of the apical regions, and histological observations of root tips of Polygonum persicaria and rape revealed a progressve disappearance of the meristematic zone, which was replaced by enlarged cells almost devoid of cytoplasm. Thermobacteriological studies using Bacillus stearotherrnophilus spores were carried out by heating the spores under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions followed by an isothermal period. Ex perimental data obtained after isothermal heating were analyzed using a two-step linear regression procedure and a one-step nonlinear regression method. Results obtained using both analytical tech niques were close, but the 90% interval of confidence for predictions was lower when the one-step nonlinear regression was used. Conservation status of freshwater mussels in Europe: state of the art and future challenges

Freshwater mussels of the Order Unionida provide important ecosystem functions and services, yet many of their populations are in decline. We comprehensively review the status of the 16 currently recognized species in Europe, collating for the first time their life-history traits, distribution, conservation status, habitat preferences, and main threats in order to suggest future management actions. In northern, central, and eastern Europe, a relatively homogeneous species composition is found in most basins. In social species, fitness consequences are associated with both individual and social phenotypes. Social selection analysis has quantified the contribution of conspecific social traits to individual fitness. There has been no attempt, however, to apply a social selection approach to quantify the fitness implications of heterospecific social phenotypes. The effect of high pressure processing (HPP) (200–600 MPa/5–45°C/1–15 min) on the enzyme activity and some quality parameters of cloudy apple juice during subsequent storage (4°C for 12 weeks) was investigated. Statistical analysis showed that pressure, temperature, and time had a significant effect (p < 0.05) on tissue enzyme activity, decreasing the activity of polyphenol oxidases (PPO) and peroxidases (POD). No significant changes in physicochemical parameters (pH, total soluble solids, sugars, and vitamin C) were observed after HPP treatments. Evaluation of microbiological and physico‐chemical parameters of retail ready‐to‐eat mono‐varietal salads

An integrated microbiological and physico-chemical approach was applied to evaluate the decay of mono-varietal ready-to-eat escarole (Cichorium endivia var. latifolium) and red chicory (Cichorium intybus L. var. foliosum Hegi) during refrigeration. Total mesophilic microorganisms, including pseudomonads, and total psychrotrophic microorganisms were detected at high numbers in all samples just after packaging and at the expiry date. The dominant microbial populations analyzed by classical culture-dependent methods belonged to Pseudomonas and yeasts.
