Retention of Vanadium(V), Molybdenum(VI) and Tungsten(VI) by Kaolin

Abstract The ability of kaolin (approximately H2Al2Si2O8 · H2O), a well known clay mineral constituent, to retain V(V) andMo(VI) species from 10−5 and 10−4 M solutions, and W(VI) species from 10−4 M solutions was investigated in the pH range 2–7.5 using a solid/liquid ratio 1:100 (w:v). The equilibration time in the adsorption studies was 72 h, and the shaking time in the desorption studies was 17 h. 0.02 M KCl was used as ionic medium and desorbing liquid. V(V), Mo(VI) and W(VI) were all retained by kaolin to some extent, and the amounts of the elements which could be washed away from kaolin with 0.02 M KCl were very small. OBJECTIVE: Cellular detoxification mechanisms are mandatory for cellular protection against oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species. One major group of antioxidative active enzymes involved in cellular detoxification are the Glutathione S-Transferases (GST). Multiple subtypes like GSTM1, GSTP1, and GSTT1 and variants of them are known, arising from allelic variations of the GST loci. Moreover, functional variants occur in high percentages and have been associated with diseases like bronchial asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Values of broad band turbidity coefficients in a mediterranean coastal site

Abstract The Angstrom turbidity coefficient, the Linke turbidity factor, and the Unsworth–Monteith coefficient have been determined and analysed based on measurements of normal direct irradiance and global horizontal irradiance taken in Valencia, Spain, between January 1990 and December 1996. The data, which were acquired automatically and continuously, have been filtered to select only those values corresponding to clear sky conditions. Effect of TiO2 and Al2O3 Addition on the Performance of Chitosan/Phosphotungstic Composite Membranes for Direct Methanol Fuel Cells

Composite chitosan/phosphotungstic acid (CS/PTA) with the addition of TiO2 and Al2O3 particles were synthesized to be used as proton exchange membranes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). The influence of fillers was assessed through X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, liquid uptake, ion exchange capacity and methanol permeability measurements. Observation of chemical reactions between alkaline-earth oxides and tungsten at high pressure and high temperature

Abstract The potential chemical reactions of alkaline-earth oxides (AeO with Ae: Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba) and tungsten are studied at high pressure and high temperature. At pressures ranging from 5 to 10 GPa and temperatures of 2000 K, a noticeable reaction between AeO and powder tungsten (W) was detected. As a product of the reaction, scheelite-structured orthotungstates (AeWO 4 ) were formed. The reactivity of alkaline-earth oxides with tungsten increases in the order Ca 2 →AeWO 4 .

Pentacyanopropenide group as ligand in organometallic chemistry. Crystal structure and electrochemical studies of (Et4N)[W(CO)5{(C(CN)2C(CN)C(CN)2}]

Abstract The title complex has been obtained by reaction of the tetraethylammonium pentacyanopropenide with tungsten hexacarbonyl in acetone. Its crystal structure involves discrete [W(CO)5{C3(CN)5}]− anions in which the organic fragment is N-coordinated via one of the nitrogen atoms of a cyano group borne by one of the terminal carbon atoms of the allylic skeleton. The anion presents a distorted octahedral coordination with a W–N bond length [2.168(5) A] considerably longer than the W–C bond lengths [cis-W–C in the range 1.998(7)–2.068(4) A; trans-W–C 1.962(7) A]. High-pressure and high-temperature X-ray diffraction studies of scheelite BaWO4

International audience; We carried out high-pressure (HP) and high-temperature (HT) in situ ADXRD synchrotron measurements in barium tungstate (BaWO4 ) up to 7.5 GPa and 800 K. Coexistence of the scheelite and fergusonite structures was found beyond 7 GPa, both at room temperature and HT, suggesting a polymorphism zone in the P –T phase diagram. The experiments are complemented by thermodynamic calculations within the quasi-harmonic approximation. At ambient pressure, a volume thermal expansivity of 9.5 × 10− 6 K−1 was obtained for scheelite BaWO4 . At HP, the thermal expansivity of the fergusonite doubles that of scheelite. A study of the effect of molecular and aerosol conditions in the atmosphere on air fluorescence measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory

The air fluorescence detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory is designed to perforin calorimetric measurements of extensive air showers created by Cosmic rays of above 10(18) eV. To correct these measurements for the effects introduced by atmospheric fluctuations, the Observatory contains a group Of monitoring instruments to record atmospheric conditions across the detector site, ail area exceeding 3000 km(2). Comparison of aerosol size distributions measured at ground level and calculated from inversion of solar radiances

Ground-based sunphotometry measurements can be used to investigate atmospheric aerosol optical properties, such as the volume size distribution, an important parameter in the study of the effect of aerosol on atmospheric processes. Most inversion algorithms assume constant aerosol optical characteristics over the whole air column. Brown Carbon Aerosol in Urban Xi'an, Northwest China: The Composition and Light Absorption Properties.

Light-absorbing organic carbon (i.e., brown carbon or BrC) in the atmospheric aerosol has significant contribution to light absorption and radiative forcing. However, the link between BrC optical properties and chemical composition remains poorly constrained. In this study, we combine spectrophotometric measurements and chemical analyses of BrC samples collected from July 2008 to June 2009 in urban Xi'an, Northwest China. Elevated BrC was observed in winter (5 times higher than in summer), largely due to increased emissions from wintertime domestic biomass burning.
