Llengua i societat en la medicina tradicional i popular dels segles XVIII i XIX
2001
This text constitutes a study and critical edition of a Valencian prescription manuscript, from the beginning of the XIX century, which has remained practically unknown up to the present day. It juxtaposes early instances of the language in this genre with the presence of the traditional forms of the names of diseases or medicines in Valencian popular literature of the XVIII and XIX centuries.
La cosificació de les normes d'ús lingüístic. Aspectes sociològics d'un discurs distorsionat
1996
The subject matter of sociolinguistics are the rules or patterns of the functioning of language. But rules and transgressions are complementary facts, and sociolinguists must study both conventional and intentional language use (that is, traditional and meaningful social actions). When sociolinguistics deals exclusively with norms, but ne t with transgressions, sociolinguists reify a socially constructed reality. By applying the concept of reification, we consider that sociolinguists confuse rules, laws and regularities; therefore, more interpretation is needed to complement explanation, and it seems that sociolinguistics needs more «research programmes» studying the importance of individua…
Entre socioterminologie et ethnoterminologie de l'entreprise
2016
The analysis of the designations of the commercial jobs reveals an important terminological vagueness between specialty language and common language, a vagueness conveyed by the multiplicity of the sources and of the concerned medias. Based on this observation, we propose a socioterminological and ethnoterminological study aiming at referencing the current terminological units in the speech of the company as well as of the employees. The international group Michelin, the subject of the study, presents a very rich terminological group but especially a terminology motivated by a particular historical and cultural context. Then the company becomes a model of thought and the analysis is an atte…

Le dévoilement du sens à travers les avatars différents de la féminité chez Marguerite Duras
2016
Madness is an inherent quality of female protagonists in the prose of Marguerite Duras. It manifests itself through melancholy, sadness, loneliness, misunderstanding or absence arising from abandonment. The behaviour of female characters, marked by distress or “the disease of death”, is irrational, nonsensical and difficult to understand. Their attitude defies logic and attempts to capture this specificity of writing focused on the emotive sphere, on what is inexpressible. This article discusses the perception of femininity and its various incarnations, manifesting themselves through specific language, sexuality and obsessions inscribed in the nature of the weaker sex. The destruction of pe…
Role ambiguity among school principals in China and Finland
2012
This study explores the role-ambiguity phenomenon among public secondary school principals in China and Finland. Organizational dysfunction caused by role ambiguity in professional organizations has been studied since the 1960s (Kahn et al, 1964). Although role ambiguity occurs most frequently in educational organizations, few studies on role ambiguity are found on school leaders. This study contributes to this topic by building a multidimensional knowledge structure of role ambiguity among school principals. It applies a qualitative design with case study as its approach. The data was collected through ten individual interviews with upper secondary school principals in Shanghai and the Cen…

I segni parlano.
Multilingualism in (Foreign) Language Teaching and Learning
2019
I am an applied linguist who considers language learning to be a socially constructed practice. In fact, I would rather talk about applied language studies than applied linguistics, as I understand this area of inquiry to include any language-related research that bears a strong connection to societally significant phenomena. In that broad palette of research, my own work would be placed at the interface of the areas of language learning and teaching, on the one hand, and discourse studies and sociolinguistics, on the other. I have always worked with students who wish to be language teachers. Over the years, I have seen hundreds of students entering working life that is in constant turmoil.…
