Dextran sulfate (DS) consumed C3 in C4 deficient guinea pig serum. This temperature-dependent reaction required Mg++ ions and could therefore be blocked by EDTA. Isolated C3 was not influenced by DS, but serum factors were required for C3 consumption. The C3 proactivator as well as C3 were converted to their activated state by DS in guinea pig and human serum, as revealed by immunoelectrophoretical analysis. DS generated anaphylatoxin activity in serum. It is concluded that DS activates C3 via the alternate pathway of complement activation. Current concepts of activation of the alternative pathway of complement (APC) focus on the central role of an amplification mechanism triggered by C3b which is covalently bound to the surfact of activating substances. Using sulfated polyanions as model substances, an efficient fluid-phase activation of complement is demonstrated in contrast to solid-phase activation. It is shown that particulate high-molecular weight sulfated polyanions are capable of reversible binding the guinea pig and human regulatory protein beta1H. Detecting Hand-Head Occlusions in Sign Language Video

A large body of current linguistic research on sign language is based on analyzing large corpora of video recordings. This requires either manual or automatic annotation of the videos. In this paper we introduce methods for automatically detecting and classifying hand-head occlusions in sign language videos. Linguistically, hand-head occlusions are an important and interesting subject of study as the head is a structural place of articulation in many signs. Our method combines easily calculable local video properties with more global hand tracking. The restoration of body composition (BC) parameters is considered to be one of the most important goals in the treatment of patients with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, little is known about differences between AN diagnostic subtypes [restricting (AN-R) and binge/purging (AN-BP)] and weekly changes in BC during refeeding treatment. Therefore, the main objectives of our study were twofold: 1) to assess the changes in BC throughout nutritional treatment in an AN sample and 2) to analyze predictors of BC changes during treatment, as well as predictors of treatment outcome. Whilst similarities and differences have never been questioned, I claim that the analysis of prepositions’ semantics is essential to understand agent defocussing strategies. In vitro antifungal properties of mouthrinses containing antimicrobial agents

The purpose of this study was to investigate the in vitro antifungal properties of seven commercial mouthrinses containing antimicrobial agents. These included cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), hexetidine (HEX), sanguinarine (SNG), and triclosan (TRN). The minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) against six species of yeasts was determined by a broth macrodilution method. The kill-time of mouthrinses at half the concentration of the commercial formulations was also determined.
