“Dinner by the River” and “Driving to the Airport”: Andrew Taylor’s Polish Ash Poems and Jacques Derrida’s Cinder
2019
Andrew Taylor (b. 1940), one of the most eminent living Australian poets, has had a lasting relationship with Poland and Opole in particular. As a result of one of his several visits to Opole, he wrote two poems, “Dinner by the River,” which was later included in the volume edited by Peter Rose The Best Australian Poems 2008 (Melbourne: Black Inc., 2008), and “Driving to the Airport,” which appeared in The Unhaunting (London: Salt, 2009). Both poems were originally included in the volume Australia: Identity, Memory and Destiny (ed. Wolny and Nicieja, Opole 2008). The aim of this paper is, therefore, to explore the image of Poland, and the Odra River in particular, the Australian poet has cr…
Cinema e parole
2022
Optimized Multipactor-Resistant Wedge-Shaped Waveguide Bandpass Filters
2013
[EN] Wedge-shaped waveguides present a certain advantage with respect to rectangular waveguides regarding their resistance to multipactor discharges. In this paper, the optimal configuration for the wedge geometry is investigated based on theoretical results, on a precise multipactor prediction tool, and on previous experience. In addition, design rules are presented, which allow us to achieve for wedge-shaped filters electrical performances comparable to the ones of rectangular waveguide filters, while at the same time improving the multipactor-free power range. As a proof of concept, two three-pole bandpass filters with equivalent electrical characteristic of 150-MHz bandwidth, centered a…
Neighbor-Distinguishing k-tuple Edge-Colorings of Graphs
2009
AbstractThis paper studies proper k-tuple edge-colorings of graphs that distinguish neighboring vertices by their sets of colors. Minimum numbers of colors for such colorings are determined for cycles, complete graphs and complete bipartite graphs. A variation in which the color sets assigned to edges have to form cyclic intervals is also studied and similar results are given.
Assignment of Configuration in a Series of Dioxolanone-Type Secondary Metabolites fromGuignardia bidwellii- A Comparison of VCD and ECD Spectroscopy
2013
The absolute configurations of a series of phytotoxic dioxolanone-type secondary metabolites isolated from culture filtrates of the grape black rot fungus Guignardia bidwellii were determined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy in the mid-IR frequency range. Comparison of the recorded data with DFT calculations showed good agreement between experiment and theory for VCD, whereas electronic circular dichroism (ECD) data for the compounds matched poorly with the predicted spectra obtained by time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations at the same level of theory.
Core Histones Are Glutaminyl Substrates for Tissue Transglutaminase
1996
Chicken erythrocyte core histones are glutaminyl substrates in the transglutaminase (TGase) reaction with monodansylcadaverine (DNC) as donor amine. The modification is very fast when compared with that of many native substrates of TGase. Out of the 18 glutamines of the four histones, nine (namely glutamine 95 of H2B; glutamines 5, 19, and 125 of H3; glutamines 27 and 93 of H4; and glutamines 24, 104, and 112 of H2A) are the amine acceptors in free histones. The use of Gln112 of H2A requires a temperature-dependent partial unfolding of the histone, showing that structural determinants are decisive for the glutamine specificity. The structures of H2A and H2B do not appreciably change upon mo…
Structural characterisation of the natural membrane-bound state of melittin: a fluorescence study of a dansylated analogue
1997
Abstract The binding of a dansylated analogue of melittin (DNC–melittin) to natural membranes is described. The cytolytic peptide from honey bee venom melittin was enzymatically labelled in its glutamine-25 with the fluorescent probe monodansylcadaverine using guinea pig liver transglutaminase. The labelled peptide was characterised functionally in cytolytic assays, and spectroscopically by circular dichroism and fluorescence. The behaviour of DNC–melittin was, in all respects, indistinguishable from that of the naturally occurring peptide. We used resonance energy transfer to measure the state of aggregation of melittin on the membrane plane in synthetic and natural lipid bilayers. When bo…

State Control over Religious Peacebuilding
2016
Steen-Johnsen argues that it is necessary not only to consider the political strategies of a state related to the civil sphere, but also to study the enactment of these strategies in state–religious relationships. By drawing upon empirical data from Ethiopia, Steen-Johnsen shows how the political authorities in this context exert subtle and more open strategies to control political mobilization when religious actors engage in peacebuilding. This underscores the possible double nature of political strategies, as some forms of control are open and others more subtle. Steen-Johnsen outlines how the religious actors adapt to these forms of state control and develop an understanding of their own…
La problemática textual del comentario de Galeno al tratado hipocrático Sobre los humores
2014
The commentary to the Hippocratic treatise De humoribus, which was accepted as an authentic Galenic work till recent times, uses to be nowadays assigned to a mid-XVIth. century author of false ancient manuscripts, the Greek Andreas Darmarios. In spite of this, the text presents several kinds of problems that suggest a careful revisiting of the question. This article presents some of such problems and looks for a different explanation by means of the interaction of the languages involved in the transmission of the text.
