Multiple organ failure as onset of Mediterranean spotted fever: a review based on a case
2016
Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is an infectious disease endemic in the southern regions of Italy, with an incidence of about 400 cases/year. The bacteria responsible of the disease is Rickettsia conorii, transmitted to humans by Rhipicephalus sanguineus, the common dog tick. The infection usually manifests with a characteristic symptomatologic triad: fever, exanthema and the so called tache noire, which is the typical eschar at the site of the tick bite. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) and IgG enzymelinked immunosorbent assay and the gold standard micro-immunofluorescent assay, allow serological diagnosis. We report the case of a man …
Social defeat stress: mechanisms underlying the increase in rewarding effects of drugs of abuse
2018
Social interaction is known to be the main source of stress in human beings, which explains the translational importance of this research in animals. Evidence reported over the last decade has revealed that, when exposed to social defeat experiences (brief episodes of social confrontations during adolescence and adulthood), the rodent brain undergoes remodeling and functional modifications, which in turn lead to an increase in the rewarding and reinstating effects of different drugs of abuse. The mechanisms by which social stress cause changes in the brain and behavior are unknown, and so the objective of this review is to contemplate how social defeat stress induces longlasting consequence…
A heuristic, iterative algorithm for change-point detection in abrupt change models
2017
Change-point detection in abrupt change models is a very challenging research topic in many fields of both methodological and applied Statistics. Due to strong irregularities, discontinuity and non-smootheness, likelihood based procedures are awkward; for instance, usual optimization methods do not work, and grid search algorithms represent the most used approach for estimation. In this paper a heuristic, iterative algorithm for approximate maximum likelihood estimation is introduced for change-point detection in piecewise constant regression models. The algorithm is based on iterative fitting of simple linear models, and appears to extend easily to more general frameworks, such as models i…
Simulation-based estimation of branching models for LTR retrotransposons
2017
Abstract Motivation LTR retrotransposons are mobile elements that are able, like retroviruses, to copy and move inside eukaryotic genomes. In the present work, we propose a branching model for studying the propagation of LTR retrotransposons in these genomes. This model allows us to take into account both the positions and the degradation level of LTR retrotransposons copies. In our model, the duplication rate is also allowed to vary with the degradation level. Results Various functions have been implemented in order to simulate their spread and visualization tools are proposed. Based on these simulation tools, we have developed a first method to evaluate the parameters of this propagation …
Guidelines for the use of flow cytometry and cell sorting in immunological studies
2017
The marriage between immunology and cytometry is one of the most stable and productive in the recent history of science. A rapid search in PubMed shows that, as of July 2017, using “flow cytometry immunology” as a search term yields more than 68 000 articles, the first of which, interestingly, is not about lymphocytes. It might be stated that, after a short engagement, the exchange of the wedding rings between immunology and cytometry officially occurred when the idea to link fluorochromes to monoclonal antibodies came about. After this, recognizing different types of cells became relatively easy and feasible not only by using a simple fluorescence microscope, but also by a complex and some…
Drugs and diseases: Summary and consensus statements of group 1. The 5th EAO Consensus Conference 2018
2018
OBJECTIVES: The task of this working group was to update the knowledge about the use of drugs and biologicals affecting healing of soft tissue and bone during implant treatment or procedures associated with it. Moreover, the impact of titanium particles and biocorrosion on complications and implant survival has been analysed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The literature in the areas of interest (platelet concentrates, antiresorptive drugs as well as implant-host interaction) was screened using systematic reviews for the former two areas, whereas a narrative critical review was performed for the latter topic. Two manuscripts on platelet concentrates, one manuscript on antiresorptive drugs and one m…

An outbreak ofShewanella putrefaciensgroup in wild eelsAnguilla anguillaL. favoured by hypoxic aquatic environments
2016
Microbiological analyses were conducted on wild eels from the L′Albufera Lake (Spain). A total of 174 individuals were collected in two surveys (i.e. year 2008 and autumn–winter 2014) among those caught by local fishermen into the lagoon. The prevalence of Shewanella putrefaciens group was 1.7% in 2008 and rose above 32% in 2014. It was due to an outbreak of shewanellosis that presented a morbidity rate of 64%. S. putrefaciens group strains were isolated as pure cultures from the sick eels that showed white ulcers surrounded by a reddish inflammation, damage of the mouth, extensive skin discoloration, exophthalmia, ascites and bad odour. The S. putrefaciens group was recovered from freshwat…
Seasonal recovery ofEdwardsiella piscicidafrom wild European eels and natural waters: Isolation methods, virulence and reservoirs
2018
A total of 127 wild eels caught in the L'Albufera Lake (Spain) and 24 samples of lagoon freshwater were analysed for 1-year period. Edwardsiella strains were isolated from liver/kidney on TSA-1 plates in 31.9% of total diseased specimens, and the edwardsiellosis prevalence in the fishery was of 11.8%. The use of double-strength Salmonella-Shigella (DSSS) broth and SS agar yielded Edwardsiella isolation from intestine in 100% of those edwardsiellosis-diseased eels, but also in 40.4% of other sick fish with vibriosis or aeromonosis and in 28.8% of healthy eels, as well as from freshwater in 8.3% of samples. Pure cultures were isolated on SS agar from the former, but motile Aeromonas, Plesiomo…
