Categories, Musical Instruments, and Drawings: A Unification Dream

The mathematical formalism of category theory allows to investigate musical structures at both low and high levels, performance practice (with musical gestures) and music analysis. Mathematical formalism can also be used to connect music with other disciplines such as visual arts. In our analysis, we extend former studies on category theory applied to musical gestures, including musical instruments and playing techniques. The indexing of persons in news sequences using audio-visual data

We describe a video indexing system that automatically searches for a specific person in a news sequence. The proposed approach combines audio and video confidence values extracted from speaker and face recognition analysis. The system also incorporates a shot selection module that seeks for anchors, where the person on the scene is likely speaking. The system has been extensively tested on several news sequences with very good recognition rates.

Probabilistic interpretation of the Calderón problem

In this paper, we use the theory of symmetric Dirichlet forms to give a probabilistic interpretation of Calderon's inverse conductivity problem in terms of reflecting diffusion processes and their corresponding boundary trace processes. This probabilistic interpretation comes in three equivalent formulations which open up novel perspectives on the classical question of unique determinability of conductivities from boundary data. We aim to make this work accessible to both readers with a background in stochastic process theory as well as researchers working on deterministic methods in inverse problems.

The Construction of Collective Memory: from Franco to Democracy

Collective memory is neither spontaneous nor random, but the result of a series of selective practices. It establishes group identity and sets power relations between groups. The author considers the process of selection through a case study of the transformation of Franco’s regime in Spain into a democracy. Collective memory of the time is shown to be organized around an event (the Munich Coalition or contubernio) and around the democratic transition.
