'Aesthetic Controversies?'
2017
International audience; My presentation will be devoted to the study of one remarkable Aesthetic controversy, the ‘Fleshly School of Poetry’ opposing Robert Buchanan, poet and, at the time, literary journalist, and some aesthetes including William Morris, Algernon Charles Swinburne and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The controversy erupted when Buchanan published a violent attack, ‘The Fleshly School of Poetry’ under the pseudonym of Thomas Maitland in the Contemporary Review in 1871, and lasted, I’ll argue, until the early 1880s. This case study is part of a larger project retracing the history of British Aestheticism through the many controversies, scandals and polemics the movement elicited fro…

Le gai savoir de Gabriel Peignot (1767-1849)
2016
‘A capital fellow, full of vivacity & good talk’: Arthur Symons and Gabriel Sarrazin
2018
International audience; Arthur Symons is currently regarded as a cultural mediator of the cosmopolitan fin de siècle. He stands at the crossroads of distinctive journalistic and literary networks, and of translations in different languages. In the mid-1880s Symons, who had just published An Introduction to the Study of Browning, was regarded as a budding critic with a strong interest in French poets and prose writers. Such an interest opened the door of French publications for him through the mediation of the French critic Gabriel Sarrazin (1853-1935), nowadays as neglected as Symons once was. In La Renaissance de la poésie anglaise, 1798-1889: Shelley, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Tennyson, Robe…

Aim: Historians often point out that an average Pole knows Gabriel Narutowicz as the first president of the Second Republic, murdered in the assassi-nation attempt on December 16th, 1922 in Zachęta. Unfortunately, Poles have little information about his education and professional achievements. That is why his education was presented in the article. Methods: A descriptive and explanatory method. Results: The analysis of biographical materials carried out for the purposes of the article indicates that Gabriel Narutowicz was a person who obtained a very good education. In a great deal it was the crew of his mother ‒ Wiktoria, née Szczepkowski, who initially guaranteed him home schooling and then…
