Management of retained bile duct stones: a prospective open trial comparing extracorporeal and intracorporeal lithotripsy.

1996

Abstract Background: Endoscopic management of common bile duct stones has become the approach of choice, especially in patients with high surgical risk. Problems are encountered if there are large stones or a duct stenosis. For these difficult stones, shock wave technology serves as an alternative to surgical intervention. Methods: A total of 125 patients with common bile duct stones in whom conventional endoscopic treatment had failed were selected and treated either by extracorporeal piezoelectric lithotripsy (ESWL, n=79) or intracorporeal electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL, n=46). The average age of our patients was 70 years. Results: In the ESWL group visualization of the stones by ultra…

A new heterozygous mutation (D196N) in the Gs alpha gene as a cause for pseudohypoparathyroidism type IA in a boy who had gallstones

2011

Background Pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) is characterized by hypocalcemia and hyperphosphatemia in association with an increased secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) due to decreased target tissue responsiveness to PTH. Patients with PHP type Ia are not only resistant to PTH, but also to other hormones that bind to receptors coupled to stimulatory G protein (Gsalpha). PHP Ia and Albright hereditary osteodystrophy (AHO) are caused by a reduced activity of the Gsalpha protein. Heterozygous inactivating Gs alpha (GNAS) gene mutations have been identified in these patients. Methods We studied a boy with PHP Ia. During follow-up the patient developed elevated liver enzyme serum levels and abd…

Risk factors for extrahepatic biliary tract carcinoma in men: medical conditions and lifestyle: results from a European multicentre case-control stud…

2007

OBJECTIVES: To identify risk factors of carcinoma of the extrahepatic biliary tract in men. METHODS: Newly diagnosed and histologically confirmed patients, 35-70 years old, were interviewed between 1995 and 1997 in Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany and Italy. Population controls were frequency-matched by age and region. Adjusted odds ratios and 95%-confidence intervals were estimated by logistic regression. RESULTS: The analysis included 153 patients and 1421 controls. The participation proportion was 71% for patients and 61% for controls. Gallstone disease was corroborated as a risk factor for extrahepatic biliary tract carcinoma in men (odds ratio 2.49; 95% confidence interval 1.32-4.70), …

Binding site of different tannins on a human salivary proline-rich protein evidenced by dissociative photoionization tandem mass spectrometry

2015

Abstract The sensation of astringency is thought to originate from the interaction occurring between tannins and the salivary proline-rich proteins (PRPs). Astringency perception can be modified by the structure of tannins. Herein, we study the interactions occurring between the human salivary PRP, IB5, and three model tannins with different structure, epigallocatechin gallate and the procyanidin dimers B2 and B2 3′ O -gallate, using the coupling of mass spectrometry and VUV-synchrotron radiation. The results obtained indicate that the structure of tannins, in particular the degree of polymerization and the galloylation, does not modify the binding site on IB5 involved in the interaction.

Measurement of UV-induced absorption and scattering losses in photosensitive fibers

2018

UV-assisted fabrication of gratings using photosensitive fibers is a well-established technique, based on the UV-induced permanent modification of the refractive index of the fiber material. As a result, the absorption coefficient is also changed. Here, we exploit the thermal sensitivity of whispering gallery mode resonances of the fiber itself to measure the profile of the heating along an irradiated fiber versus the input power and for different UV radiation intensities. Our technique allows discriminating between the absorption and scattering contributions to the overall losses, by comparing the results obtained with our technique with direct transmission measurements. Different photosen…

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and chiral magnetic textures in a ferrimagnetic insulator

2019

The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in multilayers of heavy metal and ferromagnetic metals enables the stabilization of novel chiral spin structures such as skyrmions. Magnetic insulators, on the other hand can exhibit enhanced dynamics and properties such as lower magnetic damping and therefore it is of interest to combine the properties enabled by interfacial DMI with insulating systems. Here, we demonstrate the presence of interfacial DMI in heterostructures that include insulating magnetic layers. We use a bilayer of perpendicularly magnetized insulating thulium iron garnet (TmIG) and the heavy metal platinum, and find a surprisingly strong interfacial DMI that, comb…

Structural study of gallium oxynitrides prepared by ammonolysis of different oxide precursors

2009

International audience; A comparative structural study has been carried out on gallium oxynitride powders using XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Gallium oxynitrides have been prepared by ammonolysis of either NiGa2O4 ternary oxide or the citrate method-derived amorphous oxide. Their crystal chemistry is different and appears to be influenced by the nature of the oxide precursor: whereas gallium oxynitride obtained from amorphous gallium oxide crystallizes with the common wurtzite structure, gallium oxynitride obtained from NiGa2O4 crystallizes with an original structure that we have identified as the carborundum II (B6) structure type or 6H-SiC. As far as we know, this is the first 6H-SiC struct…

Study of the defects in La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14 single crystals

2016

Abstract Defects that are formed during crystal growth pose a serious obstacle for potential application of La 3 Ga 5.5 Ta 0.5 O 14 (LGT) as a laser or piezoelectric crystal. We have performed the study of the defects origin in LGT crystals grown in different atmospheres using optical, EPR and time-resolved luminescence characterization methods. The absorption bands detected in the transparency region at 290, 360 and 490 nm ( T =300 K) demonstrate different dependence on crystal annealing in vacuum and air. EPR analysis demonstrated that the defects responsible for these bands are non-paramagnetic. X-ray irradiation results in hole trapping by oxygen ions thus forming O − centers perturbed …
